BlackBerry Desktop Manager comes with tethering feature

Comments

The German ninja at benezblog has leaked the upcoming BlackBerry Desktop Manager which is rumored to be bundled with the BlackBerry Bold 9700 aka the BlackBerry Onyx.

Desktop Manager 5.0.1.18 comes with a new feature that allows you to easily set up your BlackBerry as a modem so you can tether it to your laptop. It seems to be working but some users are having issues connecting. This is leaked software so all the kinks haven’t been worked out. If you’re unable to connect, you may still have to use an existing tethering solution such as TetherBerry.

Included with the rumor is a leaked copy of Desktop Manager 5.0.1.16, which includes the modem feature.

Try it out for yourself. Are you able to tether your laptop and your BlackBerry?

BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac details and impressions

mac desktop summary

The official word is that BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac will be coming in September. Don’t worry about downloading the software on that day because you will automatically get notified that an update is available and get a download link, if you’ve already downloaded RIM’s current Mac solution.

One of the great things about Desktop Manager for Mac is that it is an application built for Mac users. The software has a clean user interface and a simple navigation system. Sync’ing individual files is only one click away, whereas it is a few navigation clicks away in the PC version.

The software comes with integrated Media Sync for iTunes, and sync support for multiple iCal calendars and Entourage. You can also sync multiple devices at once.

Another great feature, especially for Storm users, is that it will automatically notify you of official carrier OS updates.

Again, the software is coming in September but we’ll have our full review for you before launch.

How to Backup and Restore Chosen Items While on BES

Comments

You’ve spent time building up your Autotext entries to make it really easy to fire off a “thank you” or “you’re welcome.” You’ve invested time in building up your Password Keeper with entries for the Jonas Brothers Fan Club and you’ve got 50+ friends on your BlackBerry Messenger.  Life is good, especially because you’re on a BES and your contacts, calendars, tasks and notes are being synced back to the server. Now, a new OS pops up and you want to update. You get IT’s blessing to do this, but then you remember those parts of your BlackBerry that are going to be wiped out. When you plug your phone into your computer, fire up Desktop Manager and try to back up certain parts of your device, you get this:

How to set up your BlackBerry as a drive on your PC (ASK JOE)

Comments

“My Blackberry won’t show up on my PC Explorer as a drive.”

Chances are that this option is just disabled. You can check by going to Options then Memory. Make sure that Mass Storage Mode Support is set to “On” and Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected is set to Prompt or Yes. If for some reason these options are enabled then we may need to have a follow up question and answer. Let us know if this works for you in the comments.

Thanks for the question Steve B.

(This answer was provided by the Ask BlackBerry Joe column. If you have a BlackBerry question, leave it for me in the comments.)

Upgrading your BlackBerry OS from your phone (ASK JOE)

Comments

BlackBerry OS

“I own the 8310 model BlackBerry… I received an email about upgrading my system from 4.2 to 4.5… Is there a way I can do that from my phone itself?”

The simple answer is, Hopefully in the future! Within the newer OS’s (4.5 and above) there is a wireless update item under Options, but this particular feature has yet to be enabled by any carrier. RIM has implemented the ability but it hasn’t been taken advantage of yet. The only option available right now is to update using you cable and supported OS download. But good things are in store for the future option of updating your Blackberry wirelessly.

Thanks for the question Cast TROY.

(Remember, these answers are part of my Ask BlackBerry Joe column. If you have a BlackBerry question, leave it for me in the comments and I’ll be sure to answer it.)

BlackBerry Desktop Software contains critical security flaw

Comments

RIM has posted a Knowledge Base article describing a critical security flaw within the BlackBerry Desktop Software. The flaw has been confirmed by Secunia, a leading vulnerability intelligence provider. Here’s the problem as described by RIM:

The BlackBerry Desktop Manager includes the Roxio Media Manager for managing media synchronization between the BlackBerry smartphone and the Microsoft Windows computer. The Roxio Media Manager includes a Microsoft ActiveX control used for retrieving and installing application updates. A buffer overflow exists in the DWUpdateService ActiveX control that could potentially be exploited when a user visits a malicious web page that invokes this control.

For instructions on how to determine whether your system has been affected and patch the flaw, follow the link below.
