UPDATE: PLEASE SEE THE UPDATED VERSION OF THIS POST AS IT INCLUDES NEWER SOFTWARE AND UPDATED TIPS.
We thought it would be prudent to go through the process of upgrading your handheld software, what with OS 4.5 and 4.6 having hit us in pretty quick succession over the last month or two. New operating systems usually have plenty of new bells and whistles that are worth getting in on, so if you haven’t yet, we’ve got instruction here on how to make the switch. The BlackBerry OS upgrade can be a daunting process if you’ve never done it before, but don’t fear – Big Papa BBCool is here to hold your hand through the whole thing.

OS 4.6 software is getting fast-tracked in order to prepare for the imminent BlackBerry Bold launch, now with the updated Desktop Manager available from Vodafone Germany. With the 4.6 BlackBerry Java Desktop Environment released just yesterday, it’s hard not to think that some of the issues delaying the launch of the BlackBerry 9000 are getting resolved. If the OS is solid enough that the JDE and Desktop Manager can be offered publicly, I think we can look out for a release real soon. T-Mobile Germany was one of the first to throw out some pricing, and Vodafone had one of the earliest sources of Bold pictures, so at very least Germans have good reason to get excited. If software’s not enough of an indicator, there’s also a batch of presale German BlackBerry Bolds to be shipped August 6th to get your hopes up…

Desktop Manager 4.6 is already rumored to have the BlackBerry iTunes sync, so there’s really nothing much new here, but Jibi’s guessing version 4.7 won’t be out until the touchscreened BlackBerry Thunder (a.k.a the BlackBerry 9500) rolls out. We still have no word on what new features the handheld software for 4.7 will be offering, but you better believe that if the desktop manager is getting its builds now, we can expect some more info sometime soon.

The new re-skinned Desktop Manager that was scoped out back in April is now public, available at RIM’s Desktop Manager 4.5 download site. It really doesn’t look like much more than a facelift… There are a few tweaks to the Media Manager, and support for switching to and from Windows Mobile 6 devices, but meh. At least the software doesn’t look like something out of Windows 95 anymore.

The shots of 4.5′s BlackBerry Desktop Manager have already been sighted, but 4.6 due to launch with the BlackBerry Bold hasn’t been seen until now. The big feature is the iTunes media syncing promised to come with the BlackBerry 9000, but aside from that, everything looks more or less like the unreleased 4.5 DM.

Word has it RIM’s fishing internally for a developer familiar with Cocoa and Objective C (both Mac programming languages), which suggests that an iPhone BlackBerry Connect client may be on the way. Apple’s enterprise e-mail is still being tested, but once it rolls out, RIM could easily cash in on the iPhone’s growing popularity rather than try to butt heads with it. It would be hard to argue with a device that boasted both the smooth touch interface as well as solid BlackBerry e-mail service – the only real downside would be the unreliable virtual keyboard. Of course, the developer may just be for making a much-needed Mac version of Desktop Manager.
