I’ve recently attended two events featuring developer evangelists with Microsoft and Samsung for Windows Phone and Android/Bada respectively. The events had very similar speakers that touched on many of the same points for both platforms. Both would talk about the specs of the latest devices, the APIs and features around the respective platforms. What they were both missing in spades, was any real business case for why someone should develop for the platform.

We are very excited about BBX. Everything RIM has said about the platform makes a lot of sense and the rumors we’re hearing about the first QNX device sound exciting. The only downside is that all the rumors point to a full touchscreen device, and we’ve never been happy with a full touchscreen BlackBerry. We need our keyboard. Regardless, a recent interview with Alec Saunders confirms some cool upcoming features of BBX, and we’re even more excited about the first devices to launch.

We received an interesting letter from an app development shop that sells their apps through Mobihand. Mobile Stream is apparently owed a total of $163,976 from Mobihand, and it looks like the 3rd party app store is keeping mum about whether they plan to pay any of the money owed to the developer. Read more after the jump.

At the BlackBerry Developer Conference this year we got a more in-depth look at BBX – the future of the BlackBerry platform. During the conference, we learned that HTML5 will be one of the programming languages that RIM will focus on and support. Web development gives you the benefit of deploying on multiple platforms and while it may not be the best route for gaming (better to use native development kit), it will certainly be a good language to start with as your first foray into BlackBerry development going forward. So do you want to learn web dev? Try TreeHouse.

Motorola’s Developer Blog recently interviewed the Chris Glode, Mobile Product Manager, at MapMyFitness. MapMyFitness is a suite of web and mobile tools and a community of runners, cyclists and all types of fitness enthusitasts. There are several apps like it on BlackBerry, and perhaps devs in general would benefit from a few of the tips and info. Like any conversation with a developer, they’re always heavily guarded when it comes to actual numbers (which is really where the value is), so the conversation isn’t as helpful as it could have been. Regardless, we’ve taken a few of the helpful tidbits.

RIM’s carrier billing partnerships are an excellent way for consumers to purchase apps without having to use PayPal or a credit card. It’s also great for developers as it provides a convenient way to monetize their applications and provide users with the app where they may not otherwise be able to afford it. Eric at Ebscer recently shared some data around carrier billing and it looks like it’s fast becoming an essential service.
