Rogers and Fido make SMS based Twitter available to customers

Comment

twitter

Rogers and Fido have announced that customers can now send and receive updates from Twitter by SMS text message, via short code 21212. The feature comes at no additional cost for customers on text messaging plans.

The service hasn’t gone live just yet, but when it does, customers who subscribe to a text messaging plan will be able to update their Twitter status and receive updates via SMS. Twitter texts are treated as standard messages under all text messaging plans.

Kudos to the Rogers/Fido group for making a deal with Twitter. Now if only carriers would preload devices with App World.

Fido launches the BlackBerry Pearl 8100

Comments

After a few months of speculation, Fido has relaunched BlackBerry service with the BlackBerry Pearl 8100. That’s right, not the BlackBerry 8120 or even the 8110, but the BlackBerry 8100. However, Fido is Rogers’ low-end consumer brand, so there must be some sort of deal involved, correct? Well, the promo image above shows that the Pearl 8100 can be purchased for $25 with a 3 year Fido agreement/data plan. Hmm, three years is a long time, so what about some sort of month to month option? $400 freaking dollars? What about the data plans?

    * $15 – Unlimited personal email and IM
    * $25 – 500MB
    * $30 – 1GB
    * $60 – 3GB

Ok, at least that’s pretty sane. For the youth demographic, though, $15 a month for email and IM (what they want the BlackBerry for anyways) and another $15 for phone service (based upon their cheapest rate) isn’t that bad. But instead of paying $400 or signing a three year contract, swing by the BBCool HQ first: we have a box of old 8100s that we’d be willing to give away, guaranteed (guarantee void in Tennessee).

Fido launching BIS BlackBerry service February 4th?

Comments

Good friend Ronen over at BerryReview is reporting that Fido will be launching its much rumored BlackBerry service on February 4th. Apparently Fido will offer only BIS and no BES service, with their first BlackBerry being the BlackBerry Pearl 8100. Here’s the rumored price points:

BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Pricing

    * $400 MTM / No Contract
    * $350 on a 2 Year
    * $25 on a 3 year w/ Voice + Data (no minimum monthly total cost required).

Fido BIS Data Plans

    * $15 – Unlimited Personal Email + IM (BBM, WM, Yahoo, AIM etc…).
    * $25 – 500MB BIS Data
    * $30 – 1GB BIS Data
    * $60 – 3GB BIS Data

Two more important items of note: BlackBerry data will be available to Fido customers without contract and tethering will be allowed. It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers and demographic Fido will attract with their offering. I’m thinking university students that want a cheap BlackBerry Pearl but no contract.

Boy, Troy was busy this holiday. In addition to the BlackBerry Storm 9520 slides, Troy was able to get his hands on confirmation that the BlackBerry Curve 8900, BlackBerry Pearl 8110 and the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 82xx will be coming to Fido in 2009 under the UNO label. No word yet on release dates, but you’ll know when we do.

BlackBerry Storm 9520 and Pearl Flip 82XX – Rogers 3G BlackBerry Blowout

Comment

While the rest of us were quietly enjoying the Holidays with our family, one lone blogger was out working the streets for the latest in BlackBerry leaks. My boy Troy Brown over at BlackBerry News has uncovered photos of two upcoming Rogers BlackBerry Releases: the BlackBerry Storm 9520 and the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 82xx.

Here’s what’s known about each device so far. Both will feature 3G HSDPA. The BlackBerry Storm 9520 will feature Wi-Fi and the Pearl Flip 82xx will feature asecondary video camera for video calling. Both will be coming to Fido as well. No word yet on eventual release dates, but it looks like we weren’t that far off previously. You can see more slides after the jump!

Fido kills off BlackBerry Connect support, other carriers should follow suit

Comments

Fido Fail

One of saddest moments of each WES for me is walking by the BlackBerry Connect booth, seeing a lone RIM employee bored out of his skull next to three non-BlackBerry devices, and awkwardly trying to avoid eye contact so I don’t have to talk to him. But then I think they must have done something to deserve the posting, like giving secrets to Boy Genius, and I walk away feeling much better.

On June 3rd, Canadian carrier Fido killed off their BlackBerry Connect package for new subscribers. Apparently this was done due to the ‘introduction of new data products’, i.e. devices that don’t need BC anyways. Current Fido customers with this option on their account are allowed to keep it as a grandfathered feature. I wonder how long it will take other carriers to do the same?

Fido tops Canadian customer satisfaction

Comment

FidoJ.D. Power and Associates, the same folks who did the BlackBerry customer satisfaction survey not too long ago, have put Rogers’ subsidiary Fido as top of the list for customer satisfaction. The study looked at billing, call quality, cost of service, customer service and service plan options to determine the top dog.

“We would like to thank our customers who gave us their vote of confidence and our employees who’ve worked so hard to make us better, because
you can’t receive the J.D. Power and Associates award for “Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Contract Wireless Service” without a lot of help,” says Sylvain Roy, SVP and General Manager, Fido. “We believe this award demonstrates that we are living up to our brand promise: Always by your side, with fairness, transparency, helpful suggestions and a rewarding experience from day one,” he adds.
