There is a free app in App World called Hockey Scores that lets you check NHL scores across the league. The app is updated frequently but it’s not clear whether it takes advantage of the Push APIs from RIM, which would push the scores to the device in near-real time.
Hockey Scores is free in App World and available for almost every device.

While the app has been in App World for some time now, I got a chance to sit down with the folks at Verisign at the BlackBerry Developer Conference, and they showed me their VIP Access app. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a free download that provides you with an additional layer of security for your online profiles.
Once you register your VIP Acccess app, you get a new One Time Password every 30 seconds, which is securely stored on your BlackBerry. If your username or password is hacked, you still have an additional layer of security.
So if you have an account with eBay, PayPal, AOL or GEICO, this is worth the free download.

The Urbanspoon app is a really cool way to choose what restaurant you’re going to be eating at. All you do is let the app tumbler spin and it gives you either a random restaurant or style of cuisine. The app gives you all the relevant info about the restaurant too, including a number to call, map and reviews.
To download Urbanspoon for FREE, visit http://urbanspoon.com/blackberry from your blackberry browser.

Got the tip from Ronen at BerryReview that the BlackBerry Developer Conference Mobile Guide is now available for download. This free app is a must have for anyone attending the event, and it’s compatible with all BlackBerry devices. I’m running it on the Storm2 9550 right and it’s very smooth.
Even if you’re not at the conference, this would be a great way to see what you’re missing. The guide gives you access to schedules, maps, and speaker bios for the conference.
Looking forward to meeting everyone at the conference!

Location based services have been getting an incredible amount of attention by investors and consumers alike. LBS adds another layer of data to our mobile experience, and has the ability to enrich almost any application we use today.
Centrl is the latest LBS application for BlackBerry (also available for other platforms) and it is completely free of charge. The service also lets you login from your existing accounts (Facebook, MySpace, iGoogle, Friendster, Ning, Hi5, bebo, Orkut, iTimes, or Sonico) which means there’s no need to register.
Like any good LBS application, Centrl pulls in data from Yelp, Citisearch, Wikipedia and other databases, in order to help users find location sensitive information. The app will also broadcast your whereabouts, and help you connect with friends and users.
One particularly unique feature of this application is that it offers a free IM client that is displayed on the map. Users who are viewing the service on a PC, can communicate with users who are on their mobile, virtually in real-time and without fees for both sides.
Try it out for yourself! Again, Centrl is a free service that will only get better as more users get on board. See who is using it in your area.
Download Centrl for your BlackBerry OTA by pointing to http://centrl.com/bb/centrl.jad from your BlackBerry browser.
