Picasa for BlackBerry scrapped?

BlackBerry for Picasa dumped

Picasa, Google’s picture-organizing and sharing service, was looking to get all cozy-like with BlackBerry back around CES, but has apparently been killed off since. How come? Well, I’ve got a few theories. You might notice that BlackBerry’s Facebook page recently started showing off Flickr for BlackBerry rather prominently. Although RIM’s managed to make nice with the multitude of competing instant messaging services like Yahoo!, Windows Messenger Live, and Google Talk, maybe things won’t be quite as friendly with picture sharing. A more optimistic theory that pops to mind involves the BlackBerry Bold’s picture geotagging feature. I would love to see that fit right into Google’s Panoramio, which would quickly trump Picasa. Where do you guys think the future of picture sharing on BlackBerry is going to lie?

BlackBerry Cool Best of WES: 2008 Winners

Comments

wes08-bow-winner

You already heard what the people have chosen, and now to announce what the supposed experts have to say. Like we mentioned in last week’s podcast, it’s a tough call to make with such a wide range of products being shown off at WES. The judges for each category had their own set of standards (as you can see), so the results are bound to be highly subjective. The fact of the matter is every exhibitor at WES had something worth showing off, and these were just some of the few that stuck out in our judge’s minds.

Winners after the jump…

iTookThisOnMyPhone gets geotagging update

Comments

ITTOMP, the lovingly-anacronymed picture-sharing service, announced an update at WES, including geotagging support. Although not new, it was news to me that the service supports video sharing too, which is pretty awesome considering how impressed with Qik I was. Geotagging is getting increasingly popular, with whole apps like GPSed revolving around it, and even becoming integrated into the BlackBerry 9000. You can nab the latest version of iTookThisOnMyPhone for free right over here.

bbPlaces lets you place your BlackBerry pictures

Comments

bbPlacesJosep’s been testing out the beta for a new geotagging project called bbPlaces, which lets you directly upload pictures taken on your BlackBerry to Google Maps, where your GPS unit will place the photo where you took it. bbPlaces even provides a rating system for when you visit photos of places uploaded by others, as well as directions on how to get there in the first place. Although it might be pigeonholed to the 8310 and 8130 (the only BlackBerrys with both camera and on-board GPS), and the app is natively written in Spanish, it’s still great to see stuff like this getting developed. The site includes English instructions, so give it a shot and let us know how it goes.
