Here’s an interesting piece of news sent to us by our friends over at IntoMobile. It seems as though the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 will debut a new Folder on the Home Screen: Instant Messaging. It’s a move that makes sense considering the Pearl Flip target demographic and their love of IM. However, don’t despair non-FlipBerry using but IM-loving members of the BlackBerry Nation: the IM folder will be available to all via OS 4.6.1 (now if only I could get my Bold’s “Wireless Upgrade” option to work).

Persistent.im went live today, offering a very cool cross-platform IM tool that works between AIM, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, Jabber, Google Talk and MySpaceIM by delivering messages through a conference bot. This works just dandy on any of your mobile IM clients – just add the conference bot to your friends list, and messages will be sent and received between participants through it. With so many different platforms becoming popular, having common channels is increasingly important. Be sure to scope out our multi-service BlackBerry IM client review for a few more options along that vein. Persistent.im is free and running its beta, so go ahead and sign up if you like your existing chat client but want to get in touch with buddies elsewhere, too.

The folks behind the BlackBerry IM client EQO are getting pumped for the Olympics and are giving away $50-worth of service credit every day, as well as taking names for the grand prize at the end of the events: a BlackBerry of your choice. All you have to do is subscribe to Olympic news through their mobile app, vote on your favourite of three stories daily, and your name is in the draw. Keep voting every day from August 8th through 24th. to increase your odds and to team up with other voters from your country. The top three voting countries will each get a medal on the EQO website, with flags waving high. EQO managed to slip our radar for the big BlackBerry IM Client Review, but expect an update soon with our impressions. While I’m not sure that little yellow dudes with pupils that dilated would ever make it past the Olympic drug test, I’d happily take a free BlackBerry from ‘em – go ahead and get started at EQO.com, then sign up for the contest.

It certainly wasn’t a quiet week at BlackBerry Cool HQ. With barely any time to recover from back-to-back national holidays, we learned that Bell and Telus are trying to charge us for incoming SMS, the BlackBerry Thunder may not be the BlackBerry Thunder, and the BlackBerry Javelin may be here before Christmas. Oh, and let’s not forget the release of the sequel to the most hyped mobile device, ever.
On the home front, Simon was able to piece together the mother of all BlackBerry IM client reviews while also providing an in-depth guide to everything you’d want to know about The Smartphone Challenge (trust us, this is something you want to know about).
Sorry for the late post, but it was so we could debut our wicked new podcast banner. You’ll find podcast downloading/streaming options, as well as links to all the relevant posts, after the jump. Enjoy!

While Live Messenger was only available on certain carriers earlier when the BlackBerry Instant Messaging Clients review was underway, it just recently opened up and is available for free download. All the usual goodies are there, like smileys and status messages, but it looks like this launch is also being accompanied by a Live Hotmail app as well, offering free push e-mail from your Hotmail inbox.

After encountering a half-zillion different IM clients the other week, we thought it might be prudent to throw them all in the ring together and see how they compare. It’s a beefy list, indeed… in terms of stand-alone clients, we have BlackBerry Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and Google Talk. Among the multi-platform apps, we have Palringo, IM+, Mundu, Instango, JiveTalk, and WebMessenger.
AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ and Microsoft Live Messenger are also options if you’re packing a supported device.

Although the beta didn’t earn Palringo many friends, maybe the public launch will have fixed some of the issues with this promising BlackBerry IM client. Push-to-talk support is nothing to sneeze at, especially alongside picture and video sharing. ICQ, MSN, GTalk, AIM and all the other big names are supported, so if IMing is your bag, you can download Palringo here for your Pearl, Curve or 8800-series BlackBerry.

If you’re looking tempted by Mundu, but remain a penny-pincher, Instango just launched, offering free support across multiple instant messaging systems, like GTalk, ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, QQ, Gadu-Gadu and Jabber. Instango also features SMS, mail and RSS access, file and picture sending, as well as a push-to-talk system. Sounds like it’s worth a shot if you’re still shopping around for that one client to handle all your chatting needs.

These days, it seems as though you can’t throw a BlackBerry without hitting another IM client. However, unlike most other IM clients, Mundu Mobile offers interoperability with a variety of its competitors, like AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, MSN, Gtalk & Jabber. The software will run you USD$11, but that’s a small price to pay for having all your IM’ing under one roof (except for BlackBerry Messenger, of course. Sigh.).
Go here to buy Mundu for BlackBerry. But first, check out some screenshots, software features, and a device compatibility after the jump.

We told you during WES about RIM’s partnership with Microsoft to bring Windows Live and push Hotmail support to BlackBerry, due out sometime later this summer. However, the eager beavers over at BerryReview have jumped the gun and gotten their hands on two pre-release screenshots.
I have to admit it does look okay, but really, who wants to put a Microsoft product on their BlackBerry? Check out a list of Windows Live feature specs after the jump.
