There seems to be a convergence happening between the BlackBerry and Android platforms. We’ve seen Android apps on the BlackBerry tablet and we’re pretty sure the same app launcher is coming to smartphones. Even the BlackBerry job tracking app is available for both platforms. More after the break.

The joke never gets old.
Now in its 12th year, the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project is a national competition to determine which employers lead their industries in offering the best workplace environment for their employees. Today, the project sent out a news release announcing the 2011 winners and RIM was chosen as one of those leading employers.
Some of the reasons why RIM was selected as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2011:
- Gives new employees a free BlackBerry smartphone on their first day
- Offers tuition subsidies to employees and is only a short walk to the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University
- Helps employees plan for retirement with matching RSP contributions and lets all employees share in the company’s success through a year-end bonus program
- Provides onsite massage services, flu shot clinics and discounted gym memberships to help employees stay healthy
- Is an incredible Canadian success story that continues to expand and develop new markets worldwide, creating thousands of new jobs at home and around the world

Our good friend @BambiBlue tipped us off that CanadianJobForce.com now has a BlackBerry app. The app looks to be a web portal, which is a shame because a native app is so much easier to use. In any case, if you’re looking for a job and you have a BlackBerry, this app will help you find some good prospects while on the go.

RIM has announced today it will be hiring 50 people in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The jobs will be announced this afternoon at the University of New Brunswick.
The news comes after RIM’s acquisition of the local company Chalk Media, which develops video training software for BlackBerry. With operations already in Halifax, RIM has a decent growth rate on the Eastern coast.
So if you’re a student at the University of New Brunswick, and you’re enrolled in the Computer Sciences program, be sure to apply!

Although many companies are laying off their employees, RIM is still going strong and hiring all the right talent. RIM is still looking to fill hundreds of positions.
The BlackBerry maker said it plans to make about 600 new hires in order to support its growing portfolio of BlackBerry products. The company is looking to bolster its 12,000-member-strong workforce with new engineers, salespeople, and software developers, executives said.
“We’ve built this business on some really spectacular talent and some great chemistry,” co-CEO Mike Lazaridis said in an interview with Bloomberg. “We’re not about to let that down.”
Many of these hires will come from the competition, serving to both boost RIM’s human capital, as well as take talent away from rivals.
RIM has been able to avoid the downturn so far, and it posted a strong fourth quarter thanks to handsets like the BlackBerry Storm. Smartphone sales are expected to defy the sluggishness in the overall mobile market, and RIM said its push architecture will be a key differentiator from its rivals.

Even though we’re hearing incessantly about the economic crisis, many of us are still happily going to work at a job we love. More than 2,100 companies in Canada applied to be among Canada’s Top 100 Employers in both public and private sectors.
Each job was rated based on eight key criteria: physical workplace; work atmosphere as a social setting; pay and benefits; vacation and provisions for time off; communication to employees; performance management; training and skills development and community involvement. Applicants are assigned grades for each category, and they are then compared with others in their industry to determine whether they make the national or regional cuts. The scores are not published in the final lists, and the top employers are not ranked in any particular order.
Among Canada’s Top 100 Employers was Research in Motion (RIM)!
Research In Motion Ltd., Waterloo, Ont.
Gives employees a free BlackBerry on their first day and covers usage and service fees; offers tuition subsidies to employees; celebrated its 20th anniversary by hosting a private concert for employees that featured Aerosmith and the Barenaked Ladies; offers a profit-sharing plan and year-end bonuses; provides on-site massage services, flu shot clinics and discounted gym memberships.
