Help eWeek with their BlackBerry Bold review

AT&T BlackBerry Bold Unboxing

I’m not one for starting Internet flame wars because they get incredibly childish and I start to get severe heart palpitations when I open my inbox to find a thousand emails from a forum where said flame war began. That being said, I found a BlackBerry Bold review that I wanted to call everyone’s attention to and help the guy out. The review can be found here, and I’ll point out some quotes where the reviewer could be pointed to links that he may not know about. For example:

Smartphones being used for gaming more than enterprise software

Comments

What are you doing on your BlackBerry?

A report like this makes me wonder if BlackBerry Cool should spend less time posting about email monitoring solutions more time reviewing Magmic BlackBerry games. Our sister site and mobile entertainment blog, QuicklyBored, is reporting that a recent NPD Group research paper states that not only are people using their smartphones more, but they’re playing games more often than using enterprise and productivity software. The findings come from a portion of the report aimed at discovering what features and functions consumers are most aware.

While the greatest increase in smartphone gaming was among iPhone users specifically, the nascent BlackBerry Storm might bring just as many new gamers to the fold. Post a comment to let us know if you play games on your BlackBerry, and which game is your favorite.

“Will you buy the Rogers BlackBerry Bold?” (Weekly Contest)

Questioning Rogers Pricing of the BlackBerry Bold

So the news has finally broken on Rogers’ pricing for the BlackBerry Bold, due out next week on the 19th: $399 on a three year plan. I’d like to say it’s a surprise, but honestly at this point, we should be expecting this from Big Red, right? Andy Brown of Strategy Analytics already told us that enterprises won’t be taking the Bold, except as perhaps executive candy. And after the dirt-cheap Pearl and the mid-ranged iPhone 3G, Rogers has a gap in their “high-end prestige” demographic, which the Bold fills nicely.

The question then becomes: what do the rest of us do? Are we really willing to shell out $400 on a three year contract for the BlackBerry Bold? Has the wait been so unbearable that we’re willing to do anything for BlackBerry goodness at this point? Or do we have the guts to hold out until Christmas, hoping they drop the price a little? Maybe we should follow the advice of reader Jack Frost:

The trick is for people to complain and hold-out on buying the Bold. If demand is low, then they will lower their prices. Soon it will be cheaper to get a plan in the USA and pay roaming in Canada rather than sign a 3 year deal with Rogers.

Post a comment and let us know if you’re still planning to buy the BlackBerry Bold or if $50 for the Pearl 8220 sounds a lot more enticing. The person with the best comment will win THREE FREE GAMES FROM MAGMIC.

Shoutout for crossword beta testers

Comment

Crossword puzzleThose fine folks at Magmic Games are working on a mobile crossword game for the New York Times and need some testers to make sure 5 across and 23 down actually work out. Just shoot an email to nytxbeta@magmic.com, with the subject line “Application”. Be sure to include your name, e-mail address, BlackBerry model number, location, and crossword experience. Although they didn’t mention it, I’m sure you could squeeze ‘em for a free game or two for participating.

Comments

BlackBerry Guy visits the Lincoln Memorial

Right now our friends to the south are celebrating their independence, while the Canadian contingent of the BlackBerry Nation is recovering from the celebration of ours. Still, I’m sure the intense summertime revelry hasn’t stopped us from using our beloved BlackBerrys.

So BlackBerry Cool HQ wants you to display your pride for the BlackBerry Nation. Whether it’s an embarrassing story of getting caught using your BlackBerry somewhere you shouldn’t (the shower comes to mind), climbing the Lincoln Memorial to get better wireless reception, or a link to a photo/video displaying your intense love of BlackBerry, we want it.

The person with the best post will win A SWEET BLACKBERRY COOL TEE-SHIRT and a FREE COPY OF MAGMIC’S TEXAS HOLD’EM KING 3: CONNECTED. Everyone have a safe and happy holiday!

WES Exhibitor Spotlight: Bplay

Comments

Bplay logoYou might be wondering what Bplay, a game and theme publisher, is doing at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium, but hey, suits like games too. The most recent addition to their catalog is, of course, Guitar Hero, but they’ve also got games like Leisure Suit Larry: Love For Sail, Surviving Hollywood, Star Wars: Battle Above Coruscant, Caesar, and the upcoming Texas Hold ‘em King 3. Bplay is the primary outlet for Magmic’s games, but another portal, Winplay, offers their Windows Mobile ports. Outside of games, Bplay offers themes in droves, of course. As a gamer myself, I can’t wait to see what they have on offer at WES.

Magmic Releases Sneak Peak of THK3!

Comments

Texas Hold’em King 3 Splash ScreenHuge news for BlackBerry road-warriors who fought off the doldrums of boring meetings, flight delays and (dare I say it?) bad dates with Magmic’s classic Texas Hold’em King 2, one of the best games available for your BB. We just received word today from our friends at the Big M that THK2’s sequel, Texas Hold’em King 3: Connected, will be released on April 14th.

We’ve been told that THK3 features avatars with adjustable facial expressions, advanced high scores, objective based awards, an integrated buddy list and a lobby for choosing tables. I personally can’t wait to fill up my buddy list with BBCool staffers and take all their (play) money. Stay tuned for a review, but for now, enjoy some screenshots after the jump. Post a comment and let us know what you think.

Boulder Dash coming to BlackBerry

Comments

BoulderMagmic has recently signed an agreement with IP holder First Star Software to port the latest of the Boulder Dash games, Boulder Dash Rocks, to BlackBerry. Boulder Dash is an old-style puzzler involving navigating a maze by pushing, blasting enemies and collecting jewels. While the Commodore 64 roots might be just a smidgen before my time, but I played something similar on the clunky ol’ Game Boy. Despite its age, the franchise is still kicking, with versions of the game available on both PSP and DS, and if Magmic’s proven anything, it’s that they can do retro really well.
