When we last wrote about Mimecast, we reported about theri cloud-based service that emulates the information on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) and ensures employees can access information on their BlackBerry, even if RIM is experiencing an outage. Mimecast was the first cloud service to protect against BES failures, and it challenges RIM’s message that BES is totally reliable.

AstraSync Updated to 4.1 Beta 1 with AutoDiscover and Email Auto-Save


AstraSync has gone version 4.1 Beta 1 (4.1.6) and now supports AutoDiscover, email draft auto-save, sync pausing and contains multiple performance improvements and bug fixes.

AstraSync is a BlackBerry synchronization app that does a two-way OTA sync of email, calendar and contact data with Exchange ActiveSync compatible servers including Microsoft Exchange, MailSite Fusion, Exchange Online, BPOS, CommuniGate Pro, Zimbra, Scalix, FirstClass, Open-Xchange, Kerio MailServer, SmarterMail, Axigen, Google Sync and Gmail.

Major enhancements to AstraSync include:

  • Support for AutoDiscover.
  • Email draft auto-save.
  • Throttling of background operations to improve performance.
  • Ability to Pause when synchronizing large numbers of changes.
  • Ability to create a new contact from email recipients.
  • Shortcut keys (page up / down etc) now supported on all screens.

Free Microsoft Exchange alternative public beta from Scalix



Scalix, a subsidiary of Xandro, provides Linux email, group calendaring, and messaging. Recently, they’ve announced the beta version of their new Scalix Connect for Blackberry Enterprise Server.

Together with the recent implementation of the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Protocol in Scalix ActiveSync 1.0, the new support for Blackberry is positioning the Scalix platform as an alternative to Microsoft Exchange. The commercial release is expected in the third quarter of 2009, but a free public beta is now available.

A free and fully-functional public beta of Scalix Connect for Blackberry Enterprise Server is available for immediate download.
