Mike Lazaridis on Data Compression, Video and the Competition


Reuters put out more details about the TD Newcrest technology conference where Mike Lazaridis spoke about the smartphone industry and where he believes it’s heading. One of the major topics of discussion was regarding data compression, and the fact that smartphones are increasingly being used to consume rich media.

Devices such as the iPhone and DROID are great for browsing the web and watching video, but these smartphones use as much as 30 times as much bandwidth as regular mobile phones, and I’ve heard about 3-8 times what a BlackBerry uses.

Fun Little Movies App for BlackBerry Plays Comedy Shorts



Fun Little Movies is a new addition to BlackBerry App World. The app is a portal for FLM clips that are short, funny and family friendly. Personally, I think you can get the same level of quality from YouTube. I would like to see this app go free, and use some creative advertising to support the cost. From what I’ve seen online, I’m just not sure if FLM is $2.99 funny.

How to Convert Videos for Your BlackBerry Using a Mac or a PC



With specs similar to that of a year 2000 era PC, the BlackBerry is an impressive little mobile computer. With screen resolution getting bigger with every year, I’m finding that video is all the more watchable on your device. So for those of you with a long bus, train, or chopper commute, here’s how to convert video for your BlackBerry.

PC users should watch this demonstration on how to use the Roxio Media Manager for Blackberry. The Media Manager is easy to use and works well, if you don’t have it yet, download it here.

Mac users don’t benefit from a supported video conversion suite but not to worry: the process is not that much harder to do. All you have to do is choose a file type you would like to convert to, choose the settings appropriate to your device, then drop the completed file into iTunes and sync using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac.

Chalk Media Rebrand and Update Mobile Chalkboard as Chalk Pushcast


Chalk Media, the company acquired by RIM that specializes in mobile video services, today announced Chalk Pushcast Software 5.4. This is the latest and newly branded version of Mobile Chalkboard, which is a tool for delivering audio and video to BlackBerry devices, most often for training purposes.

Chalk’s Pushcast Software 5.4 features a new UI, deeper integration with BES, SSL security for web access, and support for OS 5.

Free Vringo video ringtones for the BlackBerry Bold beta edition



Vringo is a video ringtone service for your mobile device that includes a social component so you can share your favorite videos with friends. Their application is being developed for the BlackBerry Bold, and they’re looking for early adopters to try out their fully functional social and visual ringtone application.

The service provides a large catalog of free video ringtones and it also lets you turn your own videos into a video rintone format.
