Official BlackBerry Blog Inside BlackBerry Gets a New Look

Inside BlackBerry have updated their site with a new look as well as more community features. The new layout features:

  • A direct link to the Developers Blog.
  • Link to the Community Post (support forums blog).
  • More MyBlackBerry community promotion.
  • Links to all their social networks (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube).
  • Featured YouTube video from the BlackBerry channel.
  • Twitter feed.
  • Google login.
  • Recent comments section.
  • Tags.

The update looks decent and it makes reading the site a little easier. Overall, I think this is a positive improvement, but I the real value from Inside BlackBerry is going to be from the content. I really liked the most recent article about the trackpad, and I think RIM should put out more of these. At least a feature per day would be ideal.

Grab your free holiday wallpapers from MyBlackBerry

I’m not sure if this is new, because I didn’t know until @ASacco pointed it out, but the MyBlackBerry site has some free holiday themed wallpapers that you can install. Some of them are really well done and it’s always nice to have something official. I think it would be good to start including themes rather than wallpapers. RIM has the resources to be able to offer us all free holiday themes.

On that note, what do you guys think of MyBlackBerry?

MyBlackBerry Community Manager talks social media

MyBlackBerry has been live for some time now and it is part of a bigger social media push at RIM. The company is leveraging Facebook, Twitter, forums and blogs, to send out their message.

InsideBlackBerry sat down with MyBlackBerry’s Community Manager Becky Young, to talk about the project and social media at RIM in general.

It’s interesting to see a company such as RIM get into social media as RIM has been known to be a very traditional and conservative company. As times change, and RIM is seeing a great consumer base, inevitably the culture at the company changes with it.

According to Becky, RIM got into MyBlackBerry from “mostly seeing web 2.0 and using web 2.0 tools in our everyday lives outside of RIM. With MyBlackBerry we wanted to do two things: create a place that is all about YOU and YOUR BlackBerry smartphone (not everyman’s BlackBerry smartphone – but yours) and connect this place to the largest BlackBerry smartphone community in the world.”

MyBlackBerry does have a lot of potential but it would be nice to see the site offer something that we can’t get elsewhere. The competitive advantage with RIM will obviously be scope, in that they have the power to bring users in from the entire BlackBerry network, almost effortlessly. Once this community has grown, the question is what will they do with it?

To have your say, join the Feature Request thread on MyBlackBerry and let them know what you want to see.

Official MyBlackBerry forum and community registration now available

You can now register for the MyBlackBerry forums and community. There isn’t much there at the moment, but it is the summer and things tend to be a little slow around this time of year. Hopefully things will pick up in the fall when more devices are launched and the community gets a boost.

Also, many users are saying they are having trouble getting in with Google Chrome, so if you’re getting errors, try changing browsers.

MyBlackBerry not available but join the discussion anyways

While RIM assured us that MyBlackBerry would be available to the public this week, it still requires an invitation key. I’ve seen many people on Twitter asking to get an invite, so I thought I’d let you know what’s going on in the community, so you don’t feel left out.

As you may know, the focus of MyBlackBerry is around the forum discussions. The forum is divided into 3 categories: Applications, Tips and Tricks and General. Keep in mind, this is still very much in an early development phase and so the user base is small and the conversations are fairly bland.

Official BlackBerry social network and forums MyBlackBerry UPDATE

UPDATE: Sorry folks, it turns out RIM actually hasn’t made it public even though a notice went out saying it was live at midnight. I’ll keep you posted.

RIM seems to be rolling out a full social networking plan. First, they launch their official blog, and now they have a forum and social network called MyBlackBerry.

The site is in a beta stage and the community is still relatively small, but RIM has an opportunity to grow it into something really big. I’m not sure if it’s possible, but if RIM could leverage the carriers’ help, they could message North American BlackBerry users and instantly make it the biggest BlackBerry social network out there.

While forums are already present in the space, and we already have some great BlackBerry blogs (ahem), the industry still lacks a social network with the numbers to make it what we want. A social network of millions of BlackBerry users, all exchanging BlackBerry related news and information, would be great for the industry.
