Get Invite-Only Beta Apps From the BlackBerry Beta Zone

RIM has introduced the BlackBerry Beta Zone, a site for invite-only beta programs that is now available to the general public. Currently, RIM has the App World test center available to the general public, but the number of applications is pretty sparse, and not exactly the most exciting apps. Also, the Beta Zone will solely feature RIM products such as upcoming versions of BBM and official apps such as the BlackBerry Twitter client.

Here are some beta programs that you can get access to via the Beta Zone:

  • BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 maintenance release for the BlackBerry® Curve™ 8520 and BlackBerry® Curve 8530 smartphones. This program will be open to members who live in Canada and will be capped at 1000 participants.
  • BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.1. This program will be open to all members.
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.2. This program will be limited to invited organizations only. Stay tuned for more information in future posts on recommending organizations for beta program invites.
  • BlackBerry Beta Zone. This program will be open to any members. This program will be about the BlackBerry Beta Zone itself. It will not include any product software.

Head over to the BlackBerry Beta Zone for more information, or check out the Inside BlackBerry post for more details.

Feature Details Leaked for Upcoming Official Twitter App

The Official BlackBerry Twitter app isn’t too far away and the beta reviews weren’t great. Many of the complaints about the app were focused on the fact that it provided very little that other Twitter clients didn’t provide. The ability to Tweet from the messages folder, at first seems innovative, but we get the same functionality from SocialScope. Should RIM be developing first party applications at all?

RIM Announce Official Twitter and LinkedIn Apps Almost Here

In the latest BlackBerry Connection Newsletter, RIM mentioned that the official Twitter app and LinkedIn app are “almost here”. The newsletter doesn’t mention any specific release dates, but if they’re talking about it now, I’m hoping within a month is a reasonable definition of “soon”. Also of significance, is the fact that RIM is calling their official Twitter app a “business app”.

The Official BlackBerry Twitter App Impressions

First of all, I wanted to thank BlackBerry Cool for the chance to win a invitation code for “Twitter for BlackBerry” through Facebook! I am already getting good use out of the app and I thought I would share some of my thoughts about the app.

When I heard for the first time that RIM was working on a Twitter app my first reaction was negative. My thoughts were “leave it up to the third party developers to build Twitter applications.” After giving it some thought, and seeing some of the leaked photos that were circulating on the Internet, I started to change my mind. After all, RIM is the king of the “push” that we have all come to love! For the past few months I have been anxiously awaiting the release of the application only to be disappointed to hear that it was coming out in “Semi-Private Beta.” When I saw that BlackBerryCool was giving away two invites through their Facebook fan page, I quickly commented on the post and rest is history. I have used every twitter application that I know of at this time, and already this is one of my favorites.

Beta Review: Official BlackBerry Twitter Client from RIM

The official BlackBerry Twitter client was shipped out to a group of select testers, one of which is BlackBerry Cool. I thought I’d put together some initial thoughts on the app, with the understanding that it’s still in beta and and a work in progress.
