Opera Mini Launching in App World this Quarter

I was on the phone with Philip Gronvold, US Manager of Business Development at Opera Software recently, and he told me Opera Mini will be available in App World during this quarter. Apparently, the news is already public and was casually slipped into a press release somewhere, but I can’t find it from Google. Maybe an adept reader will find the news and comment a link.

This news is really interesting because it highlights one of the major advantages of going with BlackBerry versus Apple. RIM doesn’t fear competition, they embrace it. Apple would never let any third party application compete with a first party application such as a browser. It would be really incredible if RIM opened up more of their APIs to Opera, allowing them to integrate more into the BlackBerry platform.

Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 now available for download

UPDATE: I’ve been reading a lot of the feedback and it seems this build isn’t stable on the 9700. If you’re a 9700 user, consider waiting until the next release.

Opera Mini 5 is a great BlackBerry browser alternative, especially for the Storm. The pages look much more crisp, and the browsing experience is something a little more on par with the rest of the smartphones on the market. The downside is that there are some serious limitations to how well a third party browser can integrate with the device. Personally, I would like to see RIM give Opera much more access to their platform. It would give Storm users a much better browsing experience and something to tide them over until the WebKit-based BlackBerry browser is released.

Opera Mini is mainly for the dumb phone market, as the company has an enormous user base in places such as Russia and Indonesia. The BlackBerry experience isn’t as fine-tuned as it could be so while this is Beta 2 of Opera Mini 5, it isn’t without its bugs. Nonetheless, it is definitely worth trying out.

Opera Mini 5 launches with speed dial bookmarks and tabs

Opera Software have just announced the release of Opera Mini 5 beta, the latest release to the popular third party BlackBerry browser.

The fifth generation of Opera Mini introduces a new look and feel as well as Speed Dial bookmarks and tabs. The tabbed browsing feature is by far one of the best additions to this product. This has been a sought after feature by the BlackBerry community for some time now, and it’s great to be able to finally get it.
