OS 4.5 for BlackBerry 8330 and BlackBerry 8130 now available

BlackBerry logoCDMA users have had a fun time trying to get their hands on the latest BlackBerry software, but now they won’t have to resort to Rapidshare to get the new OS. The Canadian carrier MTS Mobility has OS 4.5 available for public download from RIM’s site. If you’re looking to try it out, just grab the file, install, make sure you have the latest Desktop Manager, and plug in your BlackBerry via miniUSB when it’s open. Don’t worry that it’s from another carrier, you should be fine after deleting the vendor.xml file on your computer. OS 4.5 features rich text e-mail viewing on supporting BlackBerry Enterprise Servers, among other goodies like a variety of attachment download capabilities and free/busy calendar lookup. Folks packing the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition might still be out of luck, although there are torrents out there for unreleased versions of the software. CDMA subscribers can head on over to RIM’s site to get upgrading their Pearls and Curves.

BlackBerry 8700 gets OS 4.5

BlackBerry 8700Not one to be taken out back just yet, the BlackBerry 8700 can now get in on all of the OS 4.5 fun that the Curve, Pearl and 8800 have recently received. The guts didn’t change too much from the BlackBerry 8700 to the BlackBerry 8100, so you’ll likely see them both supported until they’re kicked to the curb. Do you guys think the 8700 will make the OS 4.6 cut? 4.7? You can grab the latest handheld software for the BlackBerry 8700 from Orange Romania here. They’ve also got the software for a bunch of other devices if you haven’t upgraded yet.

Touchscreens and the BlackBerry Bold (BlackBerry Cool Podcast: Episode 34)

BlackBerry Cool Podcast

First up, sorry for the lateness. The aforementioned server issues slowed production, but no worries- we still recorded and have a heaping two weeks’ worth of news for you this episode. The BlackBerry Thunder and iPhone 3G were both huge news items last week. There are lots of numbers on the ‘net to refute the iPhone’s hype, while the BlackBerry faithful are sticking to their guns and holding out for the BlackBerry Bold. Some more pictures of the BlackBerry Thunder have also floated up, showing off the on-screen keypad and media player, as well as a massive false start by Expansys. This week a lot of stuff was ramping up to a BlackBerry Bold launch, primarily in the form of OS 4.6 software.

BlackBerry JDE 4.6 beta released

BlackBerry LogoWhile the last of the OS 4.5 suite is still in the process of getting outed, a beta version of the BlackBerry Java Desktop Environment for 4.6 is available. New features include being able to integrate with the Messages app, SVG support, additional BlackBerry maps APIs and more. The BlackBerry Bold is coming very soon, and those developers who aren’t RIM partners have probably been in the dark for some time now. It really wasn’t long ago at all that the 4.5 BlackBerry JDE was released, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see some developers going right from 4.3 to 4.6. Hopefully with the latest JDE available, we won’t have to worry about too many of our apps borking out after an OS upgrade…

OS 4.5 available from Orange UK

OrangeThe latest BlackBerry operating system has been making the rounds by way of private beta builds for awhile now, but it looks like a few carriers are starting to make them publicly available, including Orange UK for the BlackBerry 8120 and BlackBerry 8320, as well as TIM Italy for the 8100, 8300 and 8310. Odds are these will work hunky-dory for your own device, so feel free to give ‘em a shot and get on fresh goodies like HTML e-mail viewing (if your BIS supports it), remote e-mail lookup, native document viewing, and plenty more.
