BlackBerry OS 6 Hybrids for Bold 9000, 9700, Storm 9500, Tour 9600, Curve 8900 and 8500

A BlackBerry OS hybrid takes the best of the various OS builds and puts them into a single load. Sometimes an OS version will have a faster browser or menu navigation, and someone capable of building a hybrid OS can extract that app/file and run it on a different OS base. A hybrid OS will also tend to remove extra files that aren’t needed, allowing the device to run a little smoother. The hybrid OS world is something unique to BlackBerry, and it’s something that every BlackBerry user can enjoy getting in to. The average user tends to avoid hybrid builds because they’re not official and can sometimes lead to critical failures. You have to be comfortable enough loading a new OS on your device and restoring a nuked BlackBerry in order to really enjoy the process.

Today, hybrids were released using BlackBerry OS 6 files from the BlackBerry Clamshell 9670 and compiled into a hybrid for the BlackBerry Bold 9000, 9700, Storm 9500, Tour 9600, Curve 8900 and 8500. We have been testing the hybrids on several devices, the first of which was the Bold 9000. The Bold 9000 probably won’t be getting OS 6 so it looks like a hybrid might be the closest that users will get to trying it out, unless of course they update their hardware. Click after the jump to see screenshots and details of what applications were extracted for this OS 6 hybrid. In general, the builds are really smooth and if you haven’t tried out the hybrid world, give it a shot. You will have a new appreciation for what it’s like using an “open” platform like BlackBerry.

What BlackBerry OS 6 Means for Developers and Super Apps

We have seen a lot of BlackBerry 6 in action and it looks like a lot of visual improvements for the end user. But what about developers? Will OS 6 bring anything new to help them create rich and compelling apps? The answer is “yes”. OS 6 comes with some awesome new APIs for developers to leverage to make great apps for BlackBerry. Lets take a look at what OS 6 will allow you to do.

Graphics

The graphics in OS 6 are going to be a leap beyond OS 5. There are animation APIs in OS 6 that allow you to animate nearly everything and it’s all optimized natively. OS 6 comes with OpenGL ES 1.1 3D graphics for all devices with supporting hardware (CDMA). OpenGL ES 1.1 builds on the existing 1.0 support and allows for multitextures, automatic mipmap generation, improved rending and more. OS 6 will also come with OpenVG 1.1, which is the 2D equivalent of OpenGL.

BlackBerryCool Roundup for the Week of June 7th

Comments

A lot of apps launched this week and every content provider has a way of providing all the World Cup 2010 news to your BlackBerry. We didn’t hear from Viigo this week which is strange because they’re usually very active when it comes to major sporting events such as the World Cup. The last press release was from March when the company joined RIM, and perhaps joining such a large organization naturally slows down your company. We’ve been hearing more about OS 6 and with each leaked video of the 9800 or 9670 clamshell, we learn a little more. OS 6 will feature a lot of new APIs for developers to play with and hopefully we’ll see an influx of apps that leverage these new features. This coming week we’ll also see the launch of App World 2.0 which should bring some interesting news for developers and users alike. Be sure to catch up on a week of BlackBerry after the jump.

More BlackBerry Curve 9300 Kepler Images Leaked

Comments

The latest pictures of the BlackBerry Curve 9300 Kepler reveal something interesting about OS 6 and it’s rollback potential. The device, while it only has 256MB of RAM and is currently running OS 5, is on the 6.0 platform, which suggests it may be OS 6 capable. We have had some IT professionals write in to say that their carrier reps told them 256MB is the cutoff for OS 6, and if this is the case, many more devices than previously thought would be getting the OS 6 rollback. Again, only time will tell and we’ll have to wait until a couple OS 6 devices are on the market.

Other specs of the 9300 include:

  • 3G
  • WiFi
  • 624MHZ processor

There may also be a 9320 and 9330 in development. These may have 512MB of RAM. Be sure to hit the jump and read the rest of the article for more pics.

BlackBerry OS 6 Details Revealed in Chinese Translation of Video

Comments

Our good friends over at MMMOOO have translated the BlackBerry OS 6 video walkthrough by BerryTimes.cn. What’s interesting is that at 03:55, the guys reviewing OS 6 say the browser is “terrible”. This is really disconcerting as the browser is a central feature to OS 6 and something the community has been excited about for some time. They also call the camera “terrible” which isn’t great considering the new camera is 5MP. They don’t go into much detail about why, but say they’ll address it later. Something the BlackBerry camera needs is more responsiveness, and hopefully this will be addressed in 6.

The Twitter integration with OS 6 is really interesting. At 07:29, they show how you can send song info to Twitter for BlackBerry. The search is also improved, allowing you to search globally on device, the internet or even on YouTube (official YouTube client on the way).

Be sure to read the rest of this article after the jump because we’ve got a time-stamped translation of the video. I suggest opening the translation and video side-by-side so you can watch and read at the same time.

BlackBerry Bold 9800 Slider and OS 6 Full Video and Images

Comments

Some really clean pictures of the BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider have emerged and the device looks much nicer than we previously thought. All it took was someone with a high-rez camera to take some decent pictures and some comparison shots to see just how great this device looks. From the picture post, we know a few specs about the 9800 including:

  • No SurePress
  • 5 MP camera
  • 512MB of RAM
  • No convenience keys on the side
  • DX-1 battery

Along with the new pictures is a full video walkthrough of OS 6. The video is in Chinese but we’ll have details about it shortly. Watching someone use OS 6, it doesn’t look like there is anything tremendously new going on. It seems like OS 6 is all about user interface and adding a more visual experience to using a BlackBerry. There are new gestures with OS 6, and it makes you wonder what OS 6 will bring for non-touchscreen devices. Make sure to click the ‘read more’ link and check out all the new pics.
