North American BIS outage possible June 7th-8th

Comment

BlackBerry FailThe fine folks over at BB-Outage are letting everyone know about a possible BlackBerry Internet Service outage in North America running from June 7th-8th. Due to server upgrades, v.2.4 BIS subscribers may be unable to receive messages from integrated email accounts during the maintenance.

For those affected, please be prepared. Make sure to stock plenty of bottled water, spare batteries and possibly pen and paper to write your emails out by hand in preparation for the coming Emailpocalypse. Check out the down time for both days after the jump.

SAP integrates CRM solution into BlackBerry

Comments

SAP logoGerman-based enterprise powerhouse SAP has announced that they will be natively integrating their CRM software into the BlackBerry, with the rest of their business suite to follow. BlackBerrys with SAP’s CRM software will be shipping in the next couple months, and SAP’s EVP and general manager promised that the rest of the suite would be brought on board in “months, not years.” The article raises concerns over the outages that plagued RIM earlier this year, and the effect is might have on mission-critical business apps, but RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie said they were “not acceptable” and that they had taken steps to prevent them from ever happening again.

RIM stock up after price target raise

Comment

Mike Abramsky from RBC Capital Markets raised RIM’s price target from $140 to $150, causing their stock to raise 2.8% to $115.34 as of close of market on Friday. The analyst also rated the stock as “Outperform.” This is a pretty big turnaround from January, where RIM’s stock was rated as “Hold” and had its price target lowered from $145 to $110. Since then their stock has trended upward, even survived the multiple outages in February. Their fourth quarter financial results should be very interesting when they’re announced on April 2nd.

North American outage scheduled for March 22nd?

Comments

A dark city skylineA user on the Pinstack forums posted about a 100% outage scheduled for March 22nd, lasting through the hours 1:00 to 5:00 AM EST, and confirmed on the BB-Outage mailing list. The outage is for a database upgrade, and will prevent email and internet access on BIS and BES for all users in North America. Outages are never fun, but at least it’s planned this time, eh?

UPDATE: The downtime has apparently been rescheduled to March 29th. due to some flooding in Missouri.

Mike Lazaridis speaks about outages and more

Comments

Mike LazaridisThe team at SearchMobileComputer had a chance to sit down and talk with Mike Lazaridis, founder and co-CEO of RIM. Lazaridis talked about the recent outages, pointing out that, while the outages are lamentable, the company still has a 99.85% uptime and is gunning for four straight nines. The company came under a little fire for not getting word out as to the reason for the outage, but he dismissed this by saying that they were vastly more concerned with getting the systems back up ASAP than with reporting the cause. The article goes on to talk about Lazaridis’ thoughts on the iPhone, the advantages of RIM’s business model and their staying power in the industry.
