Preview of Poynt upcoming gas and weather features

Comment

Poynt is probably the best LBS app for BlackBerry. Currently, the app lets you find local businesses, movies, restaurants, events and people. The app gives you the relevant information you’re looking for, and with driving directions, interactive maps and contact information, Poynt connects you with these places.

In the upcoming version of Poynt (weeks away!), the app will be adding gas and weather functionality. These features are really awesome and we have some pics of the features in action.

Poynt is a great app that you can use daily. When we took a look at the app at WES 2009, we saw a ton of cool features, many of which have not yet launched but should be unofficially coming this summer (just a guess). Currently, you can search local businesses, people and movie theaters. Soon, you’ll have access to a complete restaurant search and booking service powered by Open Table.

Other features include:

  • GPS functionality has been optimized to provide faster accurate locates.
  • Cell-site locates allow Poynt to quickly access a user’s general location while awaiting a GPS lock.
  • Poynt is fully integrated with both BlackBerry Maps and Google Maps.
  • Poynt integrates with Gokivo Navigator to provide turn-by-turn voice navigation.
  • Users can add frequently accessed listings to their BlackBerry Contact List, providing convenience for future lookups.

Poynt adds voice navigation system features to free LBS app

    Comments

    Poynt unreleased features

Poynt has added another feature: Voice Navigation System integration. In addition to mapping through BlackBerry Maps and Google Maps, Poynt users have access to Voice Navigation Services Gokivo, VZ Navigator, Telus Navigator, AAAMobile, Metro Navigator and Your Nav. Users can select those services as their preferred navigation solution to map route within Poynt, allowing them to take advantage of audible turn-by-turn directions and auto-rerouting.

And what would a BlackBerry Cool post about Poynt be without the incredibly annoying screenshot of features yet to come? See above.

Awesome LBS app for BlackBerry Poynt now upgraded

    poynt

The newest version of Poynt is available and it’s a must-have application. The new version should be live on App World and ready to download so try it out!

Poynt is a convenient and timesaving service that connects consumers to local businesses and theaters at the moment they want to buy or acquire products or services. By entering search terms, the consumer is able to find businesses and movies near their location, get phone and address information as well as additional enhanced features such as accessing movie reviews and trailers. For example, a Poynt user could locate themselves via the GPS on their smartphone, then search for businesses such as a car rental agency, hairdressers, hotels or attorneys. Results are sorted by distance and the user has the option to view directions on a map, click-to-call the business, or view their website.

Poynt for BlackBerry Storm hands on

    Comments

We’ve talked about Poynt, a free local search service, quite a bit on BlackBerry Cool: as a BlackBerry Developer Challenge winner, in podcast form with developer Multiplied’s Peter Werry during BBDC and in recent releases on the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220.

Multiplied has now brought Poynt to the BlackBerry Storm and was kind enough to give us a copy early for a hands-on. After the jump you’ll find Poynt for BlackBerry Storm’s feature list, a bunch of screen captures, and impressions from our time with this nifty application. Or you could just download Poynt at the link below, considering this is one of the best applications out for the Storm right now.

BlackBerry Developer Conference: the Interviews (BlackBerry Cool Podcast)

    Comments

    The BlackBerry Cool Podcast

Ok, so we’re a little late (early?) with this edition of The BlackBerry Cool Podcast. Blame the Blackberry Developer Conference – the sunny weather and good times left us pretty unreceptive to Ottawa’s dreary climate, making doing any sort of work quite difficult.

We’ve been thinking quite a bit about BBDC this past week, because it was such a clear marker of the sea change currently underway in the BlackBerry ecosystem. There is so much energy coming from RIM and BlackBerry developers right now. The amount of cool applications displayed during the BlackBerry Cool 15, the BBDC Keynote, or by enthusiastic developers with BlackBerrys in hand was mind-boggling. If you weren’t there yourself, you wouldn’t believe BlackBerrys could do these things. I’m sure with the new APIs and tools being released by RIM, the software we see at WES will be even better.

To that end, this week’s entire podcast is dedicated to the people that help make BBDC worthwhile: developers and the VC’s that fund them.

    Beth Marcus, Zeemote
    Evgeny Lebanidze, BeamBerry
    Peter Werry, Multiplied (Poynt)
    Robert Kao, SmrtGuard (PeeKaWho)
    Rick Segal, BlackBerry Partners Fund

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get anyone from BlackBerry Cool 15 winner Nobex on the podcast (they were too busy cashing their 150,000 cheque), but we’ll have them on next week. Downloading/streaming options for the BlackBerry Cool Podcast can be found after the jump, as well as links to all the relevant news stories. Enjoy!

Special thanks to BlackBerry Cool Podcast sponsor, Rove Mobile, and BBDC coverage sponsor, bitHeads!
