BlackBerry PlayBook Product Manager Talks Bridge, Apps, and More

YouTube link

Inside BlackBerry sat down with the PlayBook Product Manager Ryan Bidan to talk about some of the questions users have been asking about the PlayBook. Some interesting questions include:

Do you need a BlackBerry to own a PlayBook? No, the BlackBerry is a value-add to the PlayBook. Without a BlackBerry, you still get access to a great tablet with core features like smooth multitasking, Flash, games and more. With a BlackBerry, you get additional productivity features like email and calendar.
What is BlackBerry Bridge? Again, pairing your BlackBerry gives you a few extra productivity features in a secure manner. When you pair the devices, some PIM information is shared and when the connection is severed, that data is gone from the device.

It should be interesting to see how many people who don’t own BlackBerrys pick up the PlayBook. Are email, calendar and BBM integral to your tablet experience? We’ll see.

Interview with the BlackBerry Pearl 3G Product Manager

WES is off to a great start with the announcement of two new BlackBerrys: the Pearl 3G and the Bold 9650. Inside BlackBerry sat down with the Pearl 3G Product Manager Joseph Gordon, to ask a few questions about the device.

The interview starts off with a CV of Joseph Gordon, but the meat of the interview is about the device itself. What were you trying to achieve for the next generation BlackBerry Pearl smartphone?

We wanted to make a revolutionary leap the same way we did with the original BlackBerry Pearl 8100 smartphone, which at the time was our most powerful BlackBerry smartphone despite the smaller size. The same is true with the BlackBerry Pearl 3G smartphone, as we have worked hard to pack all the power of the BlackBerry platform today in a compact package, with the BlackBerry Pearl 3G being the thinnest BlackBerry smartphone to date. We didn’t want to compromise on style, and we haven’t, as the BlackBerry Pearl 3G smartphone incorporates some of the elements and design of our premium product lines.

BlackBerry Storm2 Product Manager on Inside BlackBerry

Former BlackBerry Cool EIC Douglas Soltys sat down with BlackBerry Storm2 Product Manager Yasser Mirza, to talk about the device and what went into it.

It must have been a nerve racking experience to be the manager in charge of developing the follow-up to the Storm 1. Even though many users liked the device, it got some really bad Internet mojo and RIM really needed a good followup.

My favorite part of the interview is where Yasser talks about how fast he can type on his Storm2. “I can actually type faster than a QWERTY keypad BlackBerry smartphone. No joke! I’ve clocked in typing “the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” at 10 seconds, which is 60wpm.” Apparently RIM employees are always doing speed trials.
