RIM has announced the release of the BlackBerry Push Service SDK version 1.01. RIM’s famous Push SDK allows developers to deliver information through a Java or WebWorks app efficiently and reliably. The Push API is based on the open WAP Push Accesss protocol v2.2 standard, and is available to all developers and web content providers.

RIM have announced that they are now offering the BlackBerry Push Service to all BlackBerry developers. This news seems strange in that I thought the Push APIs were already available, but apparently they are now fully public.
The BlackBerry Push Service has two options: BlackBerry Push Essentials and BlackBerry Push Plus. BlackBerry Push Essentials is a free service that developers can incorporate into their applications and allows them to push content to their customers immediately. BlackBerry Push Plus has a free and paid tier that provides developers with notification that their push has been delivered. If a content provider needs to get information to someone, they can tell if the target device has received the push.
Google Apps Connector for BES is a piece of software developed by Google that sits on the BES and pushes your Google services to your BlackBerry. The software allows users to access Gmail, Google Calendar and Contacts using the built-in BlackBerry applications they already know and love.
This latest news from Google is intended to help small to medium sized businesses save costs on email services, while improving the overall BES email experience. Users can now instantly receive Gmail messages within the built-in email client on their Blackberry and they can continue to use the same shortcuts to manage their BlackBerry messages.

Our old buddy Simon pointed us to a new third party Twitter app for BlackBerry called Yatca (Yet Another Twitter Client Application). The app integrates your Tweets with your native messages folder. The app currently supports updates every 5 minutes, but expect this to change in the near future. New BlackBerry push APIs are becoming available, so we’ll soon see Tweets getting pushed so you can Twitter in real-time.

A quiet BlackBerry Internet Service upgrade has been rolled out that according to many is resulting in much quicker e-mail delivery over IMAP. Traditionally, only those on BlackBerry Enterprise Server would get their e-mail pushed to their handset instantly, and BIS users had to wait 10-15 minutes for delivery. Now anyone getting their BIS e-mail via servers that support IMAP IDLE will receive messages in real-time as the standard was designed to provide. It’s great to see the upgrade, especially for BIS users who have had less-than-stellar delivery times, but you have to wonder why it took so long for IMAP IDLE to be supported.
