Angry Birds Now Available for the BlackBerry PlayBook

One thing you hear often when reading about the BlackBerry Platform is that “BlackBerry doesn’t have Angry Birds”. It’s often used as a major negative against the platform even though there are plenty of other games. RIM announced that the PlayBook would have Angry Birds and today it is now available. It’s also interesting to note that since it’s available now for the PlayBook, it should also be available on smarpthones when the BlackBerry 10 devices launch.

Solar Impulse Solar Powered Plane Uses QNX for Control and Data Management Functions

The Solar Impulse plane is the first aircraft in the world that can fly, without fuel, during the day and night. Currently, the plane can only carry one passenger but it’s an interesting proof that it can be done. One thing CNN didn’t point out about the plane that’s interesting is that the plane uses the QNX OS for a variety of control and data management functions. How much energy you get from the sun, how much power is in the batteries and more.

5 Things We Would Have Loved to See at DevCon 2011

DevCon has wrapped up from last week and we’re just catching up now. The show was definitely interesting from a developer point of view, but one can’t help but compare it to the last DevCon when the PlayBook was announced. The problem is that there is inconsistency, and when you use a conference to launch a consumer product, it sets the tone for the next. Here are some things we would have loved to see this year, if it was more of a consumer-centric show.

Mike Lazaridis Keynote: The Introduction of BBX and the Future of BlackBerry

Lazaridis took the stage to kick off DevCon with a keynote that started off talking about the growth of the platform. He talked about the increase in subscriber base, BBM users and the benefits of being a developer for the BlackBerry platform. Some of the numbers include 70 million subscribers, 25 million downloads of BBM apps (foursquare had 200,000 downloads in one day) and something like 80 million BBM users. The biggest announcement so far is the introduction of BBX, the combination of QNX and BlackBerry.

RIM Launches Closed Beta of Native SDK for QNX Tablet OS

Things are moving along with the QNX transition over at RIM as the company has today announced a closed beta of the Native SDK for the Tablet OS. This version of the SDK is targeting game developers and will allow them to code in a C/C++ environment and take advantage of a deeper API set. Click through to read more about the SDK.
