Rupert Murdoch’s predictions for newspaper on BlackBerry

murdoch

News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch said on Thursday that the future of newspapers is digital, but it may be 10 to 15 years before readers go fully electronic.

“Instead of an analog paper printed on paper you may get it on a panel which would be mobile, which will receive the whole newspaper over the air, (and) be updated every hour or two,” he said.

“You’ll be able to get the guts or the main headlines and alerts and everything on your Blackberry, on your Palm or whatever, all day long.

“I think it’s two or three years away before they get introduced in a big way and then it will probably take 10 years or 15 years for the public to swing over.”

Does anyone else think that Rupert is a little behind the times technologically? How can he say we’re 2 or 3 years away before news on your BlackBerry is introduced in a big way? With Viigo, you get your news updated every minute. The Wall Street Journal and a host of other newspapers already have BlackBerry apps. Someone needs to get Rupert App World so he can catch up with the rest of us.

How to Torrent with your BlackBerry with minimal data usage

blackberry torrent solution

With file sharing BitTorrent site ThePirateBay.org in the news lately, I can’t help but think of how to best harness the power of BitTorrent from your BlackBerry device.

When I began exploring the issue, I was keen on the idea of bypassing the PC altogether and downloading files straight to my device. Unfortunately, my search for a BitTorrent client for the BlackBerry OS came up negative. A native BitTorrent client (if available) would be useful to the few users with robust data plans, the latest devices and a large memory cards. Also, with all the wireless security and firewalls the BlackBerry has built in, it may be a bit difficult to develop a client.

Handmark buys FreeRange

Comments

MocoNews is reporting that Handmark has purchased software developer FreeRange for an undisclosed sum. FreeRange is a mobile RSS applications firm with a fairly popular RSS reader, but I find them more exciting for their work on the Wall Street Journal and AP News applications.

FreeRange has said it will use the additional resources from Handmark to expand its video support, and iPhone and Android support, but I’m hoping they’ll put their magic touch on Handmark’s own PocketExpress application. The AP News app developed by FreeRange is clean, pretty and slick, and I’d love to see a rebuilt PocketExpress from the ground up.

Viigo unleashes NBA service

Comments

Chris Bosh

Here’s something you may not know about me: I am a HUGE NBA fan. I cheer CB4, Jose Ole and the Hump through the best of times and the worst. I will never forgive He Who Shall Not Be Named. I bleed Raptors red.

So it was a great thing to learn today that Viigo has launched a new NBA service just in time for the start of the 08-09 season (the Raptors start their season off against the 76ers tomorrow night, in case you were wondering). Typical of Viigo, the NBA service is tricked out way beyond simple NBA news feeds, offering a variety of features perfect for ballheads like myself. For example, while viewing the upcoming NBA schedule, you can add specific games of interest (Raps vs. Lakers on Nov. 30th, for example) to your Calendar to make sure you don’t miss them. Another great one is the Scores feature, which allows you to view the latest scores from around the Association while they’re being played.

You can see a bunch of screen captures of the new NBA service for Viigo. To add them, follow this path in your Viigo client: Sports –> Add Sports –> Basketball.

Preview: Project Tango

Comments

WES is just a few days away, and BBCool will be rocking the show with pictures, twitters, and fritters. As always, our coverage will be pushed through Viigo, but you might have heard that they’re getting a pretty beefy upgrade, including audio and podcasting. WES will be the first glimpse at the app in action, and thought y’all might appreciate an advance look…

For more info, check out Viigo’s walkthrough or viigo.com/tango for notifications on public beta availability.

WES Exhibitor Spotlight: Viigo

Comment

ViigoIf you missed the video on Viigo, you’ll get another chance to see them in May. They offer a full-featured RSS reader with a ton of pre-compiled feeds. If the defaults aren’t enough, you can select from hundreds of feeds in their database (including your truly), or add your own in a variety of different formats. Best of all, it’s free, so go ahead and give it a shot. If that doesn’t sound enticing enough, it’s a fair bet that we’ll finally be able to learn some details on the mysterious Project Tango at WES. Tango will add a new audio feature, with podcasts being the most likely suspect, but who knows what else the new channel will be used for…

Viigo gets updated, includes Google Reader support

Comment

BBCool to GoViigo released a little update today, the biggest change being support for feed aggregators like Google Reader. There’s also a few ads from American Express kicking around… They’re few and far between, pretty nondescript, and don’t distract too much from your reading. Aside from that, Viigo’s seen a few usability changes, like taking out the My Channels bar to make a bit more room for feeds, as well as supporting native fonts. I’ve had a few issues with Viigo’s feed menu text size when trying out new themes, so the native font support is a nice addition. There’s also a new E-Mail to Me menu option from articles, for when you’re sure you want to look at something on the big screen later on. As for aggregators, Viigo is now allowing you to add existing OPML files from aggregators such as Google Reader, My Yahoo! and Bloglines. It’s a bit tricky to find, though – go to Add Channels, Add your own channel, and Add Aggregator.

For those who haven’t tried it out, Viigo is a great little thing that lets you bring all of your RSS feeds under one roof for quick reading, as well as providing an impressive catalogue of feeds to allow you to find new content. I’m tempted to not call it an RSS reader anymore, since I’ve been getting promises galore from the Viigo guys that RSS is just the beginning. Cryptic, no? It’s a great little app, it’s free, and you can pick up BBCool’s version right here, or over the air at getviigo.com/bbcool.

NewsGator Go now free

Comments

NewsGatorIf you’ve never used Newsgator and have a healthy collection of RSS feeds to keep tabs on, for shame – it’s a great reader with not only a browser-based client, but one for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. Previously a commercial product, they’re offering their readers for free as of the latest upgrade. Viigo’s been free from the get-go, and it’s good to see other providers taking a hint. The biggest difference between the two is that NewsGator allows you to clip stories for later use, and for bloggin’ folk that’s pretty appealing. To give it a shot, head on over here.
