Call Informer displays contact details before you answer a call

Comments

UPDATE: The link has been changed.

One thing I have noticed about the BlackBerry dev community, is that they’re great about making apps that improve the phone’s functionality, rather than just offer a party trick. Not that we don’t have our share of party trick apps, like Fabian’s whip, but there is so much more.

A good example of this is a new app called Call Informer. The app is designed to help sales people quickly identify and respond to incoming calls. Having contact notes available before you answer a call allows you to make informed choices about your response.

When you receive an incoming call from a contact in your address book, Call Infomer displays the following; Caller Name, Organization, Number (inc. type such as Home, Work, Mobile etc), Contact Notes (and previous call notes) and the date/time of the last time this contact called you and the date/time of the last time you called them.

You can update the contact notes right there or you can choose to send an sms to the caller and all of this can be done from one screen before you choose to answer the call.

Features:

* Information displayed on screen as call arrives
* Contact notes and time of last phone contact is displayed
* Update contact notes without having to leave screen
* Send sms to caller without having to leave screen
* Perform all actions before answering the call
* Allows you to make informed decisions about your call response

Call Informer is available for $9.50 or on a free trial.

Happy 4th Birthday BlackBerry Cool!

Comments

bbcool birthday

The beginning of March marks the 4th year that BlackBerry Cool has been around. We started off fairly small with only a few Google ads and a lot of posts. Over the 4 years we’ve been reporting on BlackBerry, the device has gone from this, to this.

Also, our traffic has over the years gone from almost nothing to over 1 million uniques and 5 million pageviews per month!

To celebrate, we’re offering 20% off in the BlackBerry Cool store. Just use the code “BBCOOL4YEARS” which is good until Friday.

Thank you for reading BlackBerry Cool and we’re looking forward to 4 more years!

EDITOR’S NOTE: Sorry guys, the discount only applies to software.

RIM announces new certification program

Comments

BlackBerry LogoIf you were eying the new certification testing that will be available at WES this year, you’ll be interested to hear about RIM’s upcoming certificates. Available this fall will be Server Support Specialist, Support Specialist, and Solution Designer certifications, on top of the System Administrator designation launching at WES. As if that wasn’t enough to cover your wall, there are plenty more on the way…

Additional certifications for individuals planned to be available in 2009 include BlackBerry® Certified Enterprise Application Developer, BlackBerry® Certified Trainer, BlackBerry® Sales Expert and BlackBerry® Expert User. Organizational certifications planned for 2009 include BlackBerry® Certified Reseller and BlackBerry® Certified Training Center.

Varicent joins ISV Alliance

Comments

VaricentVaricent has just kicked off their new mobile sales performance management software by announcing membership into RIM’s Independent Software Vendor Alliance. In addition to letting management-types get the typical high-level business intelligence while on the move, the software also lets ground-level salespeople track their commissions, territory, sales progress and goals. A lot of sales jobs these days require a fair bit of moving around, so being able to access that info and have it all updated in real-time is a solid asset to any sales-centric enterprise. For more info, check out Varicent’s site.

RIM was actually the one to rock the summer

Comments

iPhoneAlthough we were talking primarily about penetration numbers when it came to iSuppli’s report on the iPhone’s summer performance, apparently some folks were interpreting other comments to mean that the iPhone was outselling RIM’s entire lineup. The opposite is actually true: the sum total of RIM’s phones combined have outsold the two iPhone models 2-to-1 this summer, but the iPhone did manage to outsell any individual smartphone (which is still pretty awesome). iSuppli has clarified the issue thusly:

“iSuppli’s sell-through research and the subsequent press release indicated that the iPhone outsold all smart phone models in July in the United States on an individual basis. While iSuppli stands by this analysis, it is important to note that iPhone’s retail sales did not exceed the combined retail sales of the entire BlackBerry line of smart phones (approximately twice that of the iPhone if taken in total) in the United States in July.”
