Seesmic Discontinuing Support for BlackBerry is of No Consequence

Comments

herd mentality
This is the smartphone industry these days.

Maybe it’s just because the tech industry is starved for good content or because bloggers have become too lazy to produce their own ideas, but everyone is repeating the story about Seesmic dropping support for BlackBerry as though it’s RIM’s problem. Seesmic makes social media tools. It’s sort of like a SocialScope but the BlackBerry version included support for Salesforce Chatter. The fact that Seesmic is dropping support for the BlackBerry platform is of zero consequence. They aren’t really providing anything all that great to BlackBerry users and the app reviews on App World aren’t all that good either. The fact that they’re dropping BlackBerry support will just leave room for the other developers and will have no bearing on RIM’s business.

We’ve said it before but there are millions of BlackBerrys circulating the globe. If you can’t make a sustainable business from such a captivated market then it’s not the platform that’s the problem, it’s your business model. Sure, you may find support for Android or iOS easier due to your developer base or business model, but it’s worth considering that all smartphone users are not alike, and perhaps some apps are better suited for certain platforms. And yes, RIM could be making it easier with screen sizes, but it’s not that difficult to support multiple screen sizes. Foursquare supports everything from the 8100 to the 9930.

The Seesmic Twitter client has been updated today with integration for native profiles that allow you to set custom tones and vibrations for your Twitter feed. Whether you get a mention, direct message or particular tweet, you can be notified however you’d like. The app also now features:

  • Ping.fm groups support.
  • Picture thumbnails in the composer file explorer.
  • Font size based on BlackBerry system font size.
  • Use of XAuth for secure Twitter connection.

With RIM making a first party native Twitter client, Seesmic and UberTwitter need to carve a niche of hardcore Twitter users. Does Seesmic have all the features you need?

Preview of Upcoming Seesmic for BlackBerry Update

Comments

A huge update of Seesmic for BlackBerry is coming momentarily and TechCrunch have posted a preview of what to expect. Included in the new version is support for multiple accounts, Ping.fm integration and the ability to choose your photo upload size. With the multiple account feature, you will be able to cross-post messages between different accounts at the same time, much like you can with Hootsuite. The app also allows you to set up a default account which will be generated each time you open Seesmic for BlackBerry. In case you’re wondering, you can add up to ten accounts!

The Ping.fm integration allows for you to post your updates to 50 social networks at the same time. You will obviously have to have an account with Ping.fm. While the app still allows you to use yFrog, you can also use Tweetphoto. Again, you can specify the size of these pictures before posting as well.

Free Twitter app Seesmic uses yfrog for pics

Seesmic is a free Twitter app that is like UberTwitter but without the ads. The service has been around for a little while now and they recently announced their partnership with yfrog to offer pics.

One of the upsides of the app is that it offers one click URL shortening, but as a downside, it does not offer Tweetvid functionality. If you’re a big yfrog user this could be for you.

UPDATE: Sorry about that, you can change the media provider to use Twitpic in the settings.

Just go to Seesmic.com from your BlackBerry to Download the app.
