BlackBerry Code Signing Key Replacement Now Automated and Faster

The BlackBerry code signing keys replacement process has until recently been a manual process. There was a team at RIM whose job was to review the applications and dole out keys which made getting the keys a much more lengthy process than it had to be. RIM has recently updated the code signing page to note that the process is now automated and the signing key replacement process will be much faster. Considering App World will be ballooning in size with all the new ways people can create apps for the platform, this is a crucial step. Here are the official details:

RIM Addresses a Few Questions About App World Frustrations and Upcoming Features

RIM has really ramped up the content on their official channels in response to some of the discussion that has been going on lately regarding developer frustrations and what the community would like to see. It’s great to see the company so open about this stuff, and it goes a long way to showing the community that they’re listening and reassuring them that these frustrations are being dealt with. RIM Makes BlackBerry Code Signing Keys Free for Tablet and Smartphones

Back at the last BlackBerry Developer Conference, RIM announced that they would waive all the fees for registering and deploying apps to App World. The move made a lot of sense and really helped RIM get increased interest from developers. There was also a bit of a downside, as App World became flooded with BlackBerry Themes, which aren’t exactly apps. In a similar move, RIM has made the signing keys, which used to cost $20, free for the Tablet and Smartphone OS.

Developer Tip: Transfer RIM Signing Keys to a Mac

Ryan sent us over a tip that could be helpful to any BlackBerry devs out there who are playing with the latest BlackBerry Java Plug-In for MacOS X. While most devs know that you can move your singing keys between PCs, it’s also possible to transfer these to a Mac. To find the files, you have to go to:

Eclipse.app > Right click > Show Package Contents

Next, navigate to:

Contents > Mac OS > Applications > BBEclipse > Plugins > net.rim.ejde > vmTools

Paste the files in here and you can now use your RIM signing keys.
