Viigo launches open beta

Comments

The WES build of Project Tango has obviously undergone some work, and now we can try out the next beta of Viigo. Still no love for audio just yet, but we’re sure to see it in the coming weeks as bugs get fixed and features added. What is new, however, is a CFL channel, listing live scores and ticket purchasing via click-to-call for the sports fans out there. A lot of it was built off of the same power in the existing Sports channel, only a bit more focused. The Entertainment channel is packing Bplay goodies right now that link out to the mobile site to help you get your game on. The skeleton of a Stocks channel is there, giving us a glance at what to expect. A future version with graphs, trends and news all built in would be pretty sweet for any financiers out there. Weather and RSS are unchanged, but Sports got a few additions, like the Euro 2008 games that are entrancing footballers worldwide these days.

Weekly Contest: Go Team, Go!

Comments

PyramidThis week we’re calling out to all of the sports fans out there. The geekery of BlackBerrys and the machismo of sports might look like a weird cross-section, but ESPN and MLB recognize a growing popularity. So, sports fans, let’s hear when your BlackBerry came in handiest when it comes to sports – maybe you were able to win a bet by finding scores from a recent game, maybe your BlackBerry helped avoid having to leave the court for work, maybe you got some great split-second pictures on the camera. Leave a comment, and win 3 themes from Bplay, including their recently-launched College themes

Gotta apologize for the lack of posting today… BBCool HQ underwent a move to a new office! As for the podcast, it should be going up tomorrow.

Last week’s winner behind the jump!

MLB refines its BlackBerry experience

Comment

MLBCurveBack in the summer, MLB.com released a downloadable browser shortcut to their mobile site, which was nice, but generally just considered a token to the BlackBerry crowd. Well, now they’ve narrowed it down to getting shortcuts for your particular teams – just go to yankees.com, or dodgers.com or whatever your favourite team is, and you’ll be able to download the shortcut over the air from your mobile browser.

Even more golf tracking on BlackBerry

Comments

GreenFinder logoGreenFinder is the latest product in a recent spate of golf tracking apps. The inaugural release of Itinerant Software, GreenFinder uses your GPS-equipped BlackBerry to display your distance from the front, back, and center of the green, and how far (or, in my case, how dismayingly close) you are to hazards. A yearly fee of $35 gives you access to free software upgrades and an unlimited number of course downloads if you happen to be a globe-trotting golfer. And unlike the most other golf tracking apps, this one’s been designed from the ground up for the BlackBerry.

bPlay gets ballin’

Comment

BasketballbPlay’s just released a new basketball game, NBA 2-on-2 SLAM by Magmic alongside a new Basketball theme. Anyone serious about their basketball would do well to pick both of these up. I just noticed that they also offer discounted bundles now, so if you grabbed a sports jam ringtone too, you’d be getting 10% off. Not a bad deal at all. It might be easy to say gadget geekery and playing sports are mutually exclusive, but it turns out NBA players love their BlackBerrys too.

ESPN on your BlackBerry

Comments

ESPNFor those signed up to the BlackBerry Owners Lounge, you might have heard about ESPN’s offering akin to MLB’s – you can now download a link to ESPN’s mobile site to your BlackBerry, for quick access to all your sports scores. Although Viigo’s got their own ESPN channels, if sports are all you’re looking for, this would be the way to go.

Review: Pocket Express

Comments

Pocket Express 5It’s just about that time to have another go at Handmark’s Pocket Express. We’ve been covering these guys on the ‘Cool for nearly three years now, and we can certainly start taking a look at the long-term evolution of their software. In a nutshell, Pocket Express is a suite of mini-applications that are all accessible from a single page, called PageOne. They offer a few of their channels for free (Travel, News, Sports and Weather), and the rest (like Stocks, Entertainment, 411 Search, Maps, Extras and a cool feature called MobileCierge, which puts you on the phone with a live person who can help you find information on just about anything you need) will cost you $9.99/month. Sounds good, right? Let’s take a look.

Viigo/BlackBerryCool to Go channel gets customizable

Comments

ViigoOur buddies at Virtual Reach have a few new channels available for subscription on their free RSS reader: one is a customizable ESPN sports feed and another for exchange rates. Getting exchange rates on the go is just plain handy, especially if it’s folded into something you’re already using (you are already using BlackBerry Cool to Go, right?), but the customized sports feed is certainly something new that could seriously expand the usefulness of Viigo’s channels. Instead of cruising through the folders and finding the stuff you like, being given the option to make your own ensures that you get the content you want. We’re really hoping that Virtual Reach brings this kind of thing to more of their channels.

Baseball on BlackBerry beats belated bereavement

Comments

Baseball fanIf you’re a baseball fan and need your scores right away, MLB just announced that they’ve got a homepage button that you can install on your BlackBerry for one-click access to MLB.com. Web browsing is a pretty simple way of getting content out there, although maybe not as flexible as, say, Viigo, but the MLB site is mobile-friendly and can give you quick access to your scores. So now when your team loses, you can be sooner disappointed with all your other comrades in fandom, rather than waiting to hear it later on the news.

Press release behind the jump.

Wimbledon and FIFA World Cup on your BlackBerry

Comments

Virtual ReachViigo’s been packing away the content like a Japanese hot dog eater. Virtual Reach has been pushing out BlackBerry Cool on their freely-downloadable BlackBerry client for awhile now, along with a wide variety of RSS-based feeds. For any sports fans out there, check out the Sports category on your Viigo channels, and you’ll be happy to find both Wimbledon tennis coverage as well as FIFA U20 World Cup feeds.
