LBS takes chunk of the mobile app pie

Comments

PieA recent report from Telephia is claiming that location-based services claim a whooping 51% of $118-million worth of mobile applications. A big factor in this is that LBS is by far the most expensive mobile app, being 180% higher than the average price for weather, sports, wallpapers/pictures, music, maps/directions, and personal organization tools. This markup easily makes up for the low 5% adoption rate (versus 7-13% elsewhere). Leading the way is Networks in Motion, who deal directly with carriers for distribution, with 27% market share followed distantly by TeleNav with 15%. We talked with the guys from Tele Atlas not too long ago, who had plenty of input on the growth of LBS and GPS in BlackBerrys.
