TELUS BlackBerry Tour 9630 to launch July 15th

Comments

The TELUS BlackBerry Tour 9630 is rumored to hit shelves July 15th for $249.99 on a 3-year contract.

What do you think of the pricing? It’s always expensive to be an early adopter, but at least the Tour isn’t as rich as the Bold when it first launched.

BlackBerry Tour 9630 uncovered in Telus website

Comment

blackberry_tour_9630

You can’t hide from the Internet! A CB forums member went digging around the Telus site and by adjusting file link names, the user uncovered a picture of the BlackBerry Tour 9630. The size of the image suggests that the pic will be used for the devices page, where we’ll soon see specs and pricing associated with the device.

Rumor has it that the launch date is June 22nd, which jives with the launch of the U2 360 tour, sponsored by BlackBerry. The U2 360 tour kicks off June 30th.

TELUS spends $700M in Alberta to boost telecom infrastructure

Comments

Telus bunnies

TELUS, Canada’s 2nd largest carrier said it will be investing $700 million in wireless and wireline systems, part of a 10 per cent boost in overall spending from last year.

The move is expected to help boost customer spending and increase new sign-ups which have been a little lower than expected this year. The upgrades will help launch high-speed packet access technology by 2010. That will allow for faster data transmission and video service on handset devices including smartphones such as Research In Motion’s BlackBerry.

TELUS is fortunate in that it is in a better financial position debt-wise than most carriers. It doesn’t have a lot of debt that is due in the next couple years, and it is therefore taking this opportunity to spend, while most carriers are cutting back.

So if you’re in the Alberta region, expect some better service coming from TELUS.

How to unlock a Bell or TELUS BlackBerry Storm

TELUS storm large

Unlocking the BlackBerry Storm has been a real pain for consumers. Since the TELUS and Bell Storm devices were released, they have been a success in the consumer market, which also means there has been a large demand to have them unlocked.

The Verizon 9530’s were unlockable, allowing us to use their tri-band phone on the Rogers network here in Canada. Sadly, we could not say the same for Bell and TELUS devices. Attempts at hacking the device have been met with failure. A team in the UK that was charging 15 GBP to unlock any BlackBerry, tried to crack the TELUS and Bell Storms, but were unsuccessful. A few companies managed to find an unlock solution for the 9530 from TELUS and Bell, however, it stopped all data on the devices from working.

Now all that has changed.

I was recently contacted by a company cellfservices.com who say they are now able to unlock TELUS and Bell Storms. The unlock typically takes about 1-3 weeks, and the process is slightly more expensive than your typical unlock, The process has been tested on 34 devices and has been working flawlessly.

Check them out here.

Unlocking your BlackBerry in the Chinese underground

Comments

Chinese underground

If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you know that I’m in Montreal to get some BlackBerrys unlocked. The city is only 2 hours away from BBCool headquarters in Ottawa, so I took the bus to meet some unlocking companies I found online. The first company I went to was run by a guy called Chin and what seemed to be his cousins. The place was located on the 3rd floor of a nondescript building near some strip clubs.

[Side Note: Strip clubs in Montreal offer a great lunch buffet. The meal is all you can eat for $6 and entertainment is on a purely tip basis. Very affordable. At least that's what I've heard.]
