This is where Protect places my BlackBerry
Dear BlackBerryCool,
You guys write about apps like BlackBerry Protect and SmrtGuard all the time, and I thought I would give Protect a try. Just my luck, last week I had my BlackBerry stolen and I turned on Protect to see if I could find it. Protect gave me a map with a pin of where my device is, accurate to about 6 meters (ED NOTE: pictured above). So I decided to call the police and report it stolen because it’s technically theft over $500, making it worth police attention. In the report I said I have software installed to help find my BlackBerry and an investigator called me back a few days ago. I gave him the screenshot and he said he would get back to me. This is what he said:

The makers of PocketMac have launched a new app for BlackBerry called BlackBerry ER. Their latest app is aimed at users who have lost their BlackBerry and are looking to get it back.
The app helps you identify the thief who stole your BlackBerry and gives you their location. Besides offering GPS coordinates of the thief’s location, BlackBerry ER will also also text users with the details of the thief’s identity, including phone number, IMSI number and more.
BlackBerry ER is available now for $14.97.

Now this is clever. PhoneBAK BB is an anti-theft app that will recognize when an unauthorized SIM card is in your device, and send an SMS or e-mail alert to you with all the perp’s info, including contact number, area code, cell ID, IMEI and IMSI numbers. If you’re in a company that swaps SIM cards around a lot, you can authorize up to 1,000 SIM cards per device as well as password protect the software from tampering. FindIt is offering something similar… the two combined would really cover all of your bases nicely.

A number of BlackBerrys went missing at the hemispheric summit meeting of representatives from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, reports The Swamp. A Mexican attaché, responsible for guiding the Mexican media around the premises, was caught on video absconding with “six or seven” BlackBerrys that were left on a table by members entering a meeting. White House press secretary Dana Perino said that the phones were definitely from members of the U.S. delegation, although she was unsure exactly who had lost one and whether they were from White House staffers. The whole thing is currently under investigation, so hopefully we’ll have more details soon.
