Developers: Check Out the AT&T Hackathon in Toronto During the NxNE Music Festival

RIM may or may not be sponsoring NxNE but they’ll be sponsors of the AT&T Mobile App Hackathon. The event is produced by the AT&T Developer Program and Apigee and it’s designed for attendees (technical and non-technical), to build apps and compete for prizes. The hackathon is open to any platform or programming language. If your coding skills are a little rusty, there will be live developer support from local senior developers as well as from AT&T, Sencha, and Apigee to help you code faster and more effectively.

Plastic Mobile Launches Redesigned AIR MILES App for iOS and Android

Plastic Mobile is an agency specializing in mobile based in Toronto and New York. The company has recently launched a new AIR MILES app that takes many elements of foursquare, including checking-in to businesses, and builds an AIR MILES points earning and spending experience on top. AIR MILES has been around for some time now and the whole program has been in need of a mobile campaign like this for some time. While the checkin space is a little exhausting, it does seem to align well with AIR MILES. What we don’t see in the app, is some features around the flying experience.

Pressly is a really cool startup out of Toronto, Canada that makes content look beautiful on a tablet. The service takes your content and optimizes it for the iPad and PlayBook using HTML5 standards. It’s also a great way to monetize your content for the tablet as the service has some top tier advertisers that have paid for full screen ads. We wrote about the company recently when they announced a partnership with the Toronto Star to optimize its content for tablets. Now, the company is announcing that you can register to have any blog’s content made tablet-friendly.

Extreme Startups Launches in Toronto With Up to $200K Funding For Companies

There’s a trend in the tech industry these days, especially in mobile, for tech accelerators. The general way these things work is that your company applies, and if accepted, is given a small sum of money up front to begin work on a product. For a period of anywhere between 3 and 6 months, companies in an accelerator work tremendously hard and are given support by mentors to get to a working product stage complete with demo. Ideally, startups leaving an accelerator will have enough traction to raise money to build an actual company. The most recent Canadian accelerator to launch is Extreme Startups, which is part of the same family as Xtreme Labs, whose BlackBerry apps we’ve written about many times.

Startups: Apply Now for the ExtremeU Accelerator Program

Xtreme Labs is a development shop which has a venture capital wing called Extreme Venture Partners. BlackBerry users may recognize some of Xtreme Labs’ handy work with app such as Fixmo, Unify4Life, and others. Exteme Venture Partners has announced a new year of ExtremeU, an accelerator-type program that provides seed funding and mentorship to startups.
