BlackBerry and Twitter a huge success in Venezuela

Comments

Bloomberg has a great article about the use of BlackBerrys and Twitter in Venezuela. The combination of a BlackBerry and Twitter, is apparently a crucial traffic tool in a country with shoddy road work and hectic driving conditions. Under a group called Trafico, Venezuelans flag potholes and vent frustrations about local infrastructure.

According to RIM, Venezuela’s per- capita use of smartphones outpaces Europe’s. Under Chavez’s currency controls, Venezuelans are allowed $400 annually for online purchases. It seems that they are spending this $400 on a new BlackBerry because it’s a status symbol.

If you’re interested in checking out the service that Venezuelans are using to Tweet traffic reports, try out GroupTweet.

Xobni preview BlackBerry app which is soon to be available

Comments

bb_screenshot_searchresults_screen-300x200

Here at the BlackBerry Developer Conference we got a sneak peek at the upcoming Xobni app for BlackBerry. The app features a ubiquitous search bar that is seamlessly integrated into your mail, contacts and social networks. The app gives you a great deal of data about each contact including basic contact information as well as updates from that contact’s social networks. The app will also show you possible connections from within these networks.

One of the most impressions features is the way Xobni organizes your contacts across all your email services. The Xobni demo showed how easy it is to take a common name, for which there could be tens of entries, and efficiently move between the Xobni app and your email. Also, for those names which could have multiple entries, Xobni uses a ranking system that means your most interacted with contacts are at the top.

Xobni isn’t currently available but it looks like they are very close to a launch. Stay tuned because this app looks great.

George W Bush gets a new BlackBerry in possible prep for Tweetfest

Comments

georgewbush

Former President George W Bush got a new BlackBerry, according to a tweet by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. No word on what device he has, but it must have been a Bold.

With a $7 million book deal on the way, George Dubbya Bush should be able to use his BlackBerry to build a Twitter following in preparation for the launch. While @GeorgeWBush doesn’t have any activity on it, we might start seeing a few posts from UberTwitter or SocialScope.

Can’t wait to see some Bushisms in Twitter form!

Official Twitter client for BlackBerry coming soon

abc

RIM is working on an in-house Twitter client for BlackBerry, expected to be released mid-November. First party apps have the advantage of total integration with the OS. This upcoming twitter client sounds very well crafted with push delivery of Tweets and notifications showing unread tweets on the app’s home screen icon.

Expect all the standard twitter client features of friends timeline, viewing profiles, viewing photos, manage/view who you follow, direct messages, and replies. Some of the advanced functions include the ability to tweet photos from your camera or from your memory card.

Comments? Will you be downloading the RIM built twitter app or will you be sticking with your favorite third party Twitter client?

Viigo launches microblogging for enterprise users with StatusNet

Comments

viigo_micro_blogging

Viigo has introduced a secure, mobile microblogging service for enterprise in conjunction with StatusNet support. This may be the first of its kind.

If you aren’t familiar with StatusNet, it’s basically a Twitter for corporate users. It’s a free, Open Source, microblogging platform where users can exchange 140 character messages either over the public Internet, or securely via a corporate Intranet.

While corporate Twitter accounts are generally very reserved due to brand and legal considerations, microblogging does mean more collaboration which makes it ideal for enterprise. By creating a secured microblogging service, companies can leverage the power of microblogging services, without worrying about the security implications.

For more information visit, the Viigo Enterprise Solutions page.

Monitor keywords on Twitter from your BlackBerry with Twitterlerts

Comments

twitterlerts

Twitterlerts is a Twitter client that would be ideal for public relations. Twitterlerts monitors keywords and gives you alerts when someone is tweeting that keyword.

Twitterlerts features include:

  • Easily make powerful searches on Twitter.
  • Save searches for rapid use.
  • Set alerts on important subjects
  • Share interesting Tweets by email
  • Most features work without a Twitter account
  • Sign-in to Twitter to Tweet, Reply, Repost and Follow

While Twitterlerts seems to be geared towards professionals looking to stay on top of their product, it could also be of value to the average consumer. For example, users can set alerts about their favorite celebrities and get instant notifications of any celebrity sightings or news. After all, Twitter is usually the first to know.

Twitterlerts is available for $4.99 (regularly $7.99) until August 31st.

New free Twitter client TwiXtreme comes without ads

Comments

twixtreme

The latest free Twitter client to hit the market is TwiXtreme. TwiXtreme by Xtreme Labs have come in at a time when the most popular free Twitter client, UberTwitter, began offering a free ad-supported version.

TwiXtreme offers many of the basic functionality you would expect from a decent Twitter client including:

  • Upload Pictures
  • Cool Graphics
  • Free & No Ads
  • Re-Tweet
  • Favorites
  • Mentions
  • Trends
  • Direct Messages
  • Nearby Tweets
  • Profile View
  • Search

The downside to TwiXreme is that the UI could be a little better. A blue background can make reading text a little strenuous on the eyes. Also, the ads on UberTwitter can turn out to be positive for the community. If the developers have monetized the application, they can use the money to invest in the application, thus offering a better product to the end user. Overall, this is a decent free Twitter client, but if you can get a Social Scope invite, do so immediately.

Download TwiXtreme by visiting their site TwiXtreme.com from your BlackBerry Browser.

Xtreme Labs have made some really good applications in the past such as Speed Test. Speedtest is a decent app that lets you evaluate your BlackBerry network speeds, or your WiFi connection. Download it OTA by visiting http://is.gd/lKYB from your BlackBerry Browser.
