U2 Mobile Album now available for free in App World

The U2 Mobile Album is now out on App World as a free download. The application lets you follow the No Line On The Horizon tour and features songs, video and news about the band.

Some other features you’ll find include:

  • Get inside the album with access to songs from No Line On The Horizon, essays from the band, and video clips
  • View the original, origami-style photo displays inspired by the music
  • Access dynamic news feeds from U2.com and receive alerts when new content is available
  • View exclusive images of the band in the recording studio and on the road
  • Mark your place in the crowd with geocoding, chat and share images with other fans, and view postings from the band (coming soon!)
  • Tap into the Who’s Listening section and see when and where other users are listening to the album (coming soon!)
  • Track the tour as the band moves across the globe – see where they’re going and where they’ve been (coming soon!)
  • The app is decent but when it comes to listening to music, they don’t give you much. The preview is very short and purchasing is a tedious process. Purchasing songs is done through the U2 Mobile Shop, rather than PayPal, which seems really strange considering there is already a payment mechanism in place.

    U2/RIM marketing campaign imminent

Today a ”BlackBerry Loves U2” web page has been discovered on BlackBerry.com, pushing what is called the “U2 Mobile Album“, with additional links to the official U2 website and AppWorld, along with a link to signup for more information when the U2 Mobile Album is released… Do you think it is possible u2 might ONLY initially release an entire album in mobile format? Would that be a first? When I watch the video real close, I see what appear to be some screenshot from a media player (hopefully on a BlackBerry), and one that reads “this is the image you’ll be sharing with others who listen to this song.“

Bono and RIM working on secret promotional plan

Bono was recently quoted as saying RIM is giving him total access to their labs and facilities. When asked about the deal between U2 and RIM, Bono said “I’m very excited about this. Research In Motion is going to give us what Apple wouldn’t — access to their labs and their people so we can do something really spectacular.”

When reporter Mr. Cross attempted to guess at what the partnership would include, he asked if RIM was working on a special U2 application that would help the band interact with fans as part of its “U2 360″ tour

“You’re not far off,” Bono said, before slipping away into the crowd.

Personally, I’m hoping the partnership goes beyond just developing an app. Ideally, Bono would work with RIM on developing a new device entirely. With all of Bono’s charity work in the 3rd world, this would be a good opportunity to develop a device that would contribute to his non-profit work, while helping to promote a great new piece of hardware.

“We used to hold up lighters [at rock concerts]. Now we hold up cellphones,” Mr. Cross said. “What’s going to happen if U2 can, from the stage, instantaneously communicate to each individual person? What form is that interactivity going to take? Are you going to give them a song, are you going to give them a code, are you going to give them an opportunity to text to a screen or meet each other?”

U2 partners with BlackBerry for 360 Tour

    U2 and BlackBerry

U2 is kicking off its relationship with RIM with The U2 360° Tour, sponsored by BlackBerry. The Tour is the band’s first stadium outing since the Vertigo Tour 05/06 and follows the release of their acclaimed album, No Line On The Horizon. U2 will be touring 14 cities across Europe including dates in Milan, Gothenburg, Amsterdam, Paris, Nice, Dublin, Chorzow, Berlin, Gelsenkirchen, London, Sheffield and Glasgow before finishing at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 22nd August. The European tour will be followed by dates in North America beginning at Chicago’s Soldier Field on September 12th, 2009.

“This tour announcement marks the first stage of a relationship and shared vision between RIM and U2 that we expect will lead to new and innovative ways to enhance the mobile music experience on the BlackBerry platform for U2 fans. We look forward to sharing more details as the relationship unfolds,” said Paul McGuinness, the band’s manager.

Everyone remembers the long relationship U2 and Bono had with Apple and it seems to be the end of an era. There are rumors that U2 and UMG weren’t elated about the relationship with Apple. UMG’s chief Doug Morris late in 2007 claimed his company had been ensnared by the “golden handcuffs” of Apple’s music portal. The executive explained that Universal became dependent on iTunes after insisting on copy protection and then allowing Apple to use its own proprietary format.

Partnering with U2 is a great move on the part of RIM. Not only will it help solidify BlackBerry as a company that is in touch with a wide demographic, but Bono’s charitable causes make him a formidable representative of the company. We should expect to see some interesting developments come of this, including initiatives along the same vein as Product Red.
