Comments

YouTube Link

The latest official video for the upcoming BlackBerry 6 shows off a lot of what we have already seen but adds a few details about the upcoming Social Feeds feature. Social Feeds, which we can only assume is the reason for Viigo’s acquisition, integrates all your news and social networks into one destination. There is a brief view of the new feature in the video, so you should definitely check it out.

In addition to the smooth new user interface, the new video illustrates a few of the new applications and features in BlackBerry 6 including:

  • Redesigned home screen
  • Universal search
  • Context-sensitive pop-up menus
  • Revamped BlackBerry Browser powered by WebKit

For more information, you can check out the post by Andrew Bocking, VP of Handheld Software Product Management on Inside BlackBerry. According to Bocking, BlackBerry 6 is on track for release this summer.

BlackBerryCool Roundup for the Week of June 7th

Comments

A lot of apps launched this week and every content provider has a way of providing all the World Cup 2010 news to your BlackBerry. We didn’t hear from Viigo this week which is strange because they’re usually very active when it comes to major sporting events such as the World Cup. The last press release was from March when the company joined RIM, and perhaps joining such a large organization naturally slows down your company. We’ve been hearing more about OS 6 and with each leaked video of the 9800 or 9670 clamshell, we learn a little more. OS 6 will feature a lot of new APIs for developers to play with and hopefully we’ll see an influx of apps that leverage these new features. This coming week we’ll also see the launch of App World 2.0 which should bring some interesting news for developers and users alike. Be sure to catch up on a week of BlackBerry after the jump.

This Day in BlackBerry: What Was Hot Today for the Past 5 Years Pt. 2

The BlackBerry 7270 launched in April of 2005

We are going on 5 web years here at BlackBerryCool which, in human years, is about 160. It’s interesting how history repeats itself and this is nowhere more apparent than on BBCool. Some articles that were written years ago, such as “BlackBerry Devices Finally Launch in China”, are still relevant in 2010. Other articles, such as “Blackberry Reaches 5 Million Subscriber Mark”, make you realize just how far we’ve come.

Check out below for articles from the past. Granted, they all don’t fall on exactly April 7th, as previous writers sometimes took a day off, but they’re all within a day or two. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come (and haven’t).

Breaking News: Viigo Have Been Acquired by RIM

It’s very timely that here at BlackBerryCool we’ve been talking about RIM’s strategy of “build vs buy” and today the news crosses the wire that Viigo have been acquired by RIM. According to their CEO Mark Ruddock:

Viigo is excited to announce that our company is now part of Research In Motion (RIM).

Our team has joined RIM’s global organization and will continue to bring our expertise in BlackBerry® application development and real-time content delivery to the BlackBerry platform. The Viigo for BlackBerry app will also continue to be available for download through BlackBerry App World™.

I’d like to personally thank the deal teams on both sides for their hard work and dedication over the past few months in bringing this transaction to a close.

To the Viigo Team – a very special thanks to all of you for helping to build such an exciting product, and a wonderful company. We’ve arrived at this point today because of you.

Stay tuned because we’ll be talking a lot about Build vs Buy with Rob Woodbridge for Untether.tv.

Handmark Launches The New York Daily News App

Comment

Handmark let us know that they have launched The New York Daily News app that, like many of the other Handmark apps, puts all the New York Daily content in one place. Personally, I’m a little torn when it comes to apps like this. On the one hand, I enjoy using services like Viigo to amalgamate content rather than have a separate app for each content stream. I find this more efficient and I read too many news sources to have an individual app for each one. On the other hand, if there was one particular source I read more than others, I could see using an app to get more of a newspaper style experience.

The New York Daily News app is available at nydailynews.com/mobile.

Humor: New stumpy BlackBerry unveiled during show for kids

WIRED_blackberry

I couldn’t resist the title, but there is a show traveling Canada right now called WIRED, and one of their props is an improvised giant BlackBerry. WIRED aims to educate youth about how to deal with cyber-bullying, and some of the challenges kids face growing up in a fully connected world. Funnily enough, the featured BlackBerry has Viigo loaded and a cool theme I haven’t seen yet. I actually don’t mind the square edges on the device and would probably buy a completely square form factor. I spoke to one of the actors Chris Cochrane, and apparently the kids they meet, aged 8-12, all have Facebook profiles and a lot of them have BlackBerrys.
