YouMail customers with VoIP or PBX get a free DropBox service

Comments

YouMail have announced their DropBox service: a free service that allows users to integrate VoIP and PBX voicemail with your BlackBerry voicemail. To use this service, your VoIP or PBX must support delivering voicemails by email as an MP3 or WAV file.

Every YouMail customer has a DropBox at myphonenumber@my.youmail.com (ie. 8881234567@my.youmail.com). To setup this DropBox, change the email address that your VoIP voicemail is delievered to, to the DropBox email provided.

Once setup, all voicemails sent to your DropBox should then appear in the YouMail inbox. Once there in YouMail, you have access to key YouMail features including access from BlackBerry apps, voicemail sharing, spam filtering, and more. You’ll even get full Caller ID from most services.

VoIP calling for BlackBerry without 3G or WiFi from Nimbuzz

Comments

nimbuzz

I haven’t used Nimbuzz before but I’ve been desperate for a good VoIP solution for BlackBerry. While Skype promised to give us an app back in May, they haven’t lived up to this promise. There are a few decent alternatives out there such as iSkoot, which has worked somewhat well for me so far.

Nimbuzz has partnered with Voxbone to provide a unique VoIP solution for BlackBerry. When you launch Nimbuzz, the new “blade” pops out alongside Nimbuzz’s toolset of aggregated IM services, mobile VoIP, social networking, tweets, and file-and-photo sharing.

According to the company, even if you’re out of 3G or Wi-Fi range, you still can make mobile VoIP calls on your BlackBerry.

The company is offering a pretty awesome service in that you don’t have to know the number, carry a card or even realize you’ve stepped beyond Internet reach. The Nimbuzz app, adding 750,000 sign-ups per month and operating in 200 countries, notices for you. It automatically steps in and requests permission to dial the right access number for you, which it knows, and routes the call over the Internet. Voxbone provides numbers and origination services, grabbing the call for Nimbuzz and converting it to IP.

Could this be the VoIP solution we’ve been waiting for? Comment your thoughts about this application.

Download Nimbuzz by heading over to their site and getting an SMS download link.

[ED NOTE: Tried on the BlackBerry Storm and it's not compatible. Looking to try it on a Curve 8900 in a moment but wanted to give you a heads up about the application.]

International SIM card from Truphone Local Anywhere

Comments

Truphone is a widely popular VoIP provider that plans to offer a single SIM card allowing local call rates while roaming in a host of countries. The SIM, called Truphone Local Anywhere, will hopefully reduce roaming rates and overall costs of traveling with your smartphone.

There aren’t exact details regarding pricing, but it’s likely that a flat rate fee will be charged for calls outside of your resident nation. The company also promises to chop mobile roaming charges – a major complaint for users of conventional mobile networks – by up to 80 percent.

“Until now, the only way to avoid the massive cost of mobile roaming is to carry multiple phones and multiple SIM cards, one for each country you frequent,” said Truphone CEO Geraldine Wilson. “This means juggling multiple devices and phone numbers to avoid paying the high roaming rates traditionally associated with travel.

This new chip will hopefully help businesses cut down on their mobile bills and help the bottom line during these tough economic times. Good timing Truphone!

MyGlobalTalk offers cheap BlackBerry VoIP calls (CTIA Hangover)

Comments

myglobaltalk logo

A reality of every technology conference is that news gets missed, and this year’s CTIA was no different. Ironically, we missed meeting up with the boys and girls of I2 Telecom not because of general conference business, but poor scheduling on my end. When I saw I2’s press release hit the wires today, I was immediately reminded just how excited I was to see their MyGlobalTalk service.

Put simply, MyGlobalTalk is a VoIP application that allows you to talk to friends and family oversees on the cheap through the magic of the Internet. Requiring only a single call and rates as low as 2 cents per minute, MyGlobalTalk sounds like a winner, even while in beta.

Look for more about MyGlobalTalk on BlackBerry Cool in the future. For now, go to http://www.myglobaltalk.com for more information.

UK BlackBerry Bold launch details

Comments

3 Mobile BlackBerry Bold

3 Mobile and Vodafone in the UK are getting geared up for the BlackBerry Bold launch in the very near future, starting with Vodafone “in the next two weeks”. 3 Mobile will be preloading their BlackBerry Bolds with a Skype client to make use of the integrated WiFi for cheap VoIP calling. We’re still clinging to the hope that Canada will be the first to get the Blackberry 9000 this Friday, but everyone else will be getting it shortly thereafter. On an international scope, it’s looking like the Bold is going to have a very well-coordinated launch.

Rogers launches UMA BlackBerry 8120 (Updated)

Comments

BlackBerry Pearl 8120We knew it was on the horizon, but Rogers and RIM today have finally made a joint announcement about the release of the BlackBerry Pearl 8120. Why should Rogers customers care? Well, how about snagging the first BlackBerry in Canada with UMA support allowing users to make unlimited VoIP calls via Roger’s Home Calling Zone. Of course, it will run you an extra $20 a month. Oh yeah, the device is also a steep $250 with a three-year plan. Oh Rogers, how you love to take our money.

You can learn more at: http://www.rogers.com/8120

UPDATE: The Rogers site is saying you can get this titanium beauty for as low as $150 with a mail-in rebate on a three year plan… Still, this over the upcoming BlackBerry Bold, even with UMA? No dice, Ted.

UPDATE to the UPDATE: It’s been pointed out by Aaron in the comments that the 8120’s Wi-Fi will only work for UMA and BIS email, so web browsing is a no go. Also, obsessed reader Mr. Mike reminded us to mention that the UMA 8120 will be the first BlackBerry released with OS 4.5. Thanks guys!
