Third party BlackBerry Instant Messaging clients are a key component of the BlackBerry experience. Rumor has it that around mid/late September (new device time!), BlackBerry IM clients such as Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, Google Talk and ICQ will see some really decent updates.
Your third party BlackBerry IM clients will be updated with the following features:
- Add dedicated icons to the Home Screen for one-click access to conversation boxes of specific contacts. The icon appears as the contact’s display picture or avatar
- Add contacts and display pictures or avatars to the address book to easily send instant messages, email messages, SMS text messages, or place a call right from the address book or conversation box
- Search through saved conversations
- Add dedicated emoticon icons in the conversation box

Friendplay.com has launched a free instant messaging application for BlackBerry and Java enabled phones with Yahoo, MSN, Gtalk and AIM messaging connectivity.
Download your free copy by going to im.friendplay.com on your BlackBerry browser.
Instead of one-to-one chat sessions, users can create multiple chat rooms and add their friends into a frequently chatted friend list. Other than free chat, the application is able to backup your contact list so that you can retrieve your friend list which stores the phone numbers in case they have lost their mobile phones.

AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Chat, Google Talk and MSN Messenger have all been updated and are ready for download. The applications have gone from version 2.1.44 to 2.1.45. I can’t find any documentation about added features or bug fixes so if you find any, be sure to comment.
One potential update includes the ability to link MSN Messenger contacts to contacts in your BlackBerry address book.

RIM has released a BlackBerry Knowledge Base article explaining which webmail accounts have enhanced BIS integration. While this may seem extremely boring, it’s actually pretty important, as the knowledge base effectively indicates which webmail accounts receive push-like email delivery speeds. Check out the list below to see if your webmail account is the recipient of a little extra love from the boys and girls of Waterloo.
Enhanced integration of webmail accounts is available with the following service providers:
* AOL
o Near real-time delivery of email messages
o AOL Mail icon on the BlackBerry smartphone Home screen
* Yahoo!
o Near real-time delivery of email messages
o Yahoo! Mail icon on the BlackBerry smartphone Home screen
* Gmail

* Windows Live Hotmail/MSN

o Premium account is no longer required for BlackBerry Internet Service email account integration

Yahoo! Go, the ‘all-in-one’ application designed by Yahoo! to control your mobile experience, has been updated to version 3.0.47. This new version of Yahoo! Go includes support for the BlackBerry Bold. I’ve never tried Yahoo! Go (more of a Google fan, sorry), but the application allows you to send email, upload photos, check stock quotes, search for answers and get breaking news, so it might be worth checking out. You can download the free software at the link below.

Yahoo! has recently rolled out a little something called Fire Eagle that is aiming to deliver your location to a number of different services using a common API, as well as allowing those services to update your location. Through Fire Eagle, you determine how broad (country, province, postal code), how narrow (GPS coordinates), and how visible (friends, public, specific applications) your location is. Taking a look at the application gallery, Wikinear is so far my favourite app – based on your location, it detects the 5 best Wikipedia entries about the stuff around you and pulls it to your mobile. This is a fantastic way to expand consciousness of your surroundings and maybe even learn a thing or two about the stuff you pass by every day.
While there’s very little BlackBerry-specific software here yet, Fire Eagle could very quickly become a major part of future BlackBerry location-based services and software. Of course GPS-enabled devices will have the easiest time with this system, but with cell tower positioning and even wi-fi positioning becoming more popular, LBS software could become much more readily available to an even larger audience.

Yahoo! OneSearch was a great bit of BlackBerry software that came out not too long ago, packing voice-activated Yahoo! search powered by Vlingo, but was only available in the US. Well, now Canadians and Fillipinos can get in on the fun, so long as they’re packing the BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry Curve or an 8800-series device. We talked with both Vlingo and Yahoo! about what they’re doing with OneSearch in a podcast last April if you’re looking for a bit more on the nitty-gritty of voice recognition and search. Head on over to m.yahoo.com/voice on your mobile to get started.

After encountering a half-zillion different IM clients the other week, we thought it might be prudent to throw them all in the ring together and see how they compare. It’s a beefy list, indeed… in terms of stand-alone clients, we have BlackBerry Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and Google Talk. Among the multi-platform apps, we have Palringo, IM+, Mundu, Instango, JiveTalk, and WebMessenger.
AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ and Microsoft Live Messenger are also options if you’re packing a supported device.
