Last week we reviewed both Aerize and PeeKaWho, two great pieces of software that essentially give you great-looking caller-ID functionality for your emails and SMS text messages. We’ve talked quite a bit about PeeKaWho, developed by BlackBerry Cool 15 nominee Robert Kao of SmrtGuard (also the developer of Followup and SmrtGuard), and Aerize Alerts (developed by Aerize, who also developed the Aerize Card Loader we mentioned earlier in May).

Head 2 Head: Aerize vs. PeeKaWho

While incoming calls from contacts in your address book already alert you by showing the caller’s photo and number, your BlackBerry sadly does not support the same service for email or text messaging. Unless you have Aerize Alerts v.1.1.1 or PeeKaWho - an awesome product we just reviewed.
Now, on to Aerize! The short and skinny of it is, Aerize Alerts 1.1.1 allows BlackBerry users to receive pop-up notifications on your home screen for email and SMS text messages, in a similar way that you would when a contact saved in your address book calls you. Aerize alerts is responsive, easy to use, easy to set up, and easy on the eyes.

Rogers is gearing up for the holidays and they’re going to make a big push with the BlackBerry Bold and RIM’s latest addition the BlackBerry Pearl Flip. Rogers will also be releasing the BlackBerry 8320 which is a blue Curve with Wi-Fi. The device will be $99.99 on a 3 year contract.
I love the idea of the Curve finally getting Wi-Fi. With more VoIP companies hitting the market, we’re all going to be saving money on our minutes and keeping in better touch with our friends via cheap data.
These releases and promotional deals may be just what Rogers needs to win the smartphone wars this holiday season.

Finally, AT&T is releasing the service books to run native AIM and ICQ clients on BlackBerry. If you’re an IM fiend, I suggest heading over to mobile.blackberry.com and downloading both apps. The clients are working smoothly with the BlackBerry OS and they compliment GTalk and Windows Live Messenger, making you and your device the ultimate IM machine.

The Boy Genius has posted RIM internal documents revealing their plans for pre-paid BlackBerry sales. For those of you that followed our coverage of RIM’s investor conference call, you’ll know that RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie has been talking about pre-paid for awhile.
We’ve got a full gallery of RIM’s slides after the jump, but here’s a quick breakdown on why they’re so hot for pre-paid:
-
– It targets people on a limited budget, with bad credit, or who don’t want a long-term contract.
– It unloads the financial risk off the carrier and onto the retailer.
– BlackBerry data increases the engagement of pre-paid users, thus lowering churn rate and increasing ARPU.
– It opens up the retail and indirect channels to RIM.
RIM’s looking at two different methods for their pre-pay plan. First off is the purchase of an unsubsidized device with users continually buying pre-paid cards to refill their account. The second method, and the one that is the most interesting, is BlackBerry in a Box, whereby the user purchases a BlackBerry and one year of BIS service in a box at retail, with the option to renew at weekly, monthly or yearly intervals once the initial term is up.
It seems like RIM has a very solid plan to reach new demographics and invade the retail space in a meaningful way. Post a comment and tell us your thoughts.

Great news for iDEN BlackBerry users not on the Sprint network. RIM and NII Holdings jointly announced the impending release of the BlackBerry Curve 8350i in Latin America during Q1 of 2009. the iDEN BlackBerry will see release in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru.
For those not in the know, the BlackBerry Curve 8350i is the first iDEN BlackBerry since the old 7100i, and features push-to-talk capability as well as Wi-Fi. There’s only 5 hours left of the AT&T BlackBerry Bold. The current price is at $860, so you’ll have to be a complete die-hard BlackBerry/AT&T fan to want to pay. On the other hand, this is a super sweet device and I’m sure the price will jump considerably in the last couple of hours. If anything, we should follow this item just to see how crazy people will get. Oh yeah, and the seller has a feedback rating of 2 so you’ll probably get scammed. Good luck!

There has been no word about a Myspace app for the BlackBerry Storm. Facebook has managed to get its app pre-loaded on BlackBerry devices and I’m curious why Myspace has been left out. Here is a thought: Facebook has a non-compete clause with RIM, much in the same way that Coke and Pepsi will have non-compete clauses with restaurants and campuses. Does anybody know or care why there is no Myspace app for BlackBerry?
BrickBreaker, the classic comes-with-your-BlackBerry game, is on the Storm and here’s the video. The video is a little long but you get the point really quickly. BrickBreaker is back! In touch form!
