Balsillie says Pens are staying put

I really hope I can find new uses for this Laziridis shot when this news dies down. In about 10 days, our favourite RIM exec Jim Balsillie will sign the papers that turn the Pittsburgh Penguins over to his ownership. High fives from the kids at BB Cool, by the way, Jimmy. But early reports had Jim picking up the Pens and possibly sending them to Hamilton or its surrounding areas. Well, rest easy Pittsburgh…ians, the Pens are staying in your neck of the woods… probably.

From ESPN

“Simply, if the Isle of Capri casino chain is awarded the license, the Penguins, per their agreement with the gaming giant, will receive their long-desired new arena and stay in Steel City. The license has such financial potential that the Isle of Capri agreed to cut a $290 million check for the new arena within 90 days of a winning bid. Evidently, there’s a lot of money to be made in gambling. Who knew?”

Nothing really set in stone yet, but I’m an NHL fan and, for history-sake, hope the Penguins keep their skates hanging in Pittsburgh. It’s funny. Jim Balsillie can’t avoid rumours and speculation, no matter what pie he’s got his hands in.

steve - i think there’s a typo in the header (unless there’s some cleverness lurking in a golf reference). should read “stay put”, not staying putt.

    give me a shout jerky.

Isn’t it funny how two subjects (cell phones, hockey) can be so different, but still end up together? Hockey on a blackberry site, never saw it coming, but good news for a Pens fan like me!

The big IF is the Isle of Capri getting their licence… If they don’t, the Pens can go anywhere… The very next paragraph of the ESPN story you quoted says:
“If, however, the Isle of Capri doesn’t get the license, the Penguins will be able to test the open market when their Mellon Arena lease expires in June. The team could choose to leave Pittsburgh for Kansas City or Hamilton, Ontario, or who knows where.”

I wonder if we sw-ontarians can lobby against Isle of Capri?? A Penguin on skates in Hamilton makes about as much sense as one in Pittsburgh. ;)

[…] Breaking news - hot off the wire, if you will. Just thought I’d check in with the BlackBerry world over the weekend and this little news came right out and bit me on the nose. Contrary to reports, both our own and otherwise, it looks as though RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie has withdrawn his bid to purchase the Pittsburgh Penguins. […]
