New download of BlackBerry Viewer available

Thanks to d_fischer over at the Forums for the tip. Back in October, we let you know about Idokorro’s BlackBerry Viewer, an app for your desktop that works with the Desktop Manager to show your BlackBerry’s display on your monitor. Originally the trial download was set to expire on February 1, 2007.

Thankfully, the kind-hearted folks at Idokorro have presented another download of the viewer, this one expiring January 15, 2008. For those who question the app, I use it for all of my reviews and swear by it more than I probably should. This is a great download to have around.

RIM named advertiser of the year in 2006

Seriously, how did I miss this? I’ve got no issues admitting when I’m wrong, but I’ll still stand strong saying RIM and the BlackBerry need some better efforts. Apparently Canada’s authority on Marketing, publication Marketing Magazine, doesn’t agree as they named Research In Motion as “Marketer of the Year” in 2006, mainly for their Pearl marketing efforts. I’m baffled that this slipped through, but seriously? REALLY?! Marketer of the year?! You’ve got to read this for yourself.

Interbrand’s Tudhope has high hopes for RIM and thinks it has a good shot at making it onto his company’s 100 Best Global Brands list in the next couple of years. To date, no Canadian company has made the list.

Help: BlackBerry advertising archive

If you’re a regular BBCool reader, you’ll know that advertising holds a soft spot in my tiny heart. A new project I’d like to assemble is an archive of all advertising that’s BlackBerry-related. If any of you have any scans or items that you could contribute, please email me at steve [at] blackberrycool [dot] com, noting the advertisement’s context and any other info you think we and the other readers should know. Check out a couple that I managed to scrape up after the jump, but I think it’d be great to see an evolution of sorts. Your help and patronage, as always, is greatly appreciated.

Weekend Contest reminder

A note to remember: our weekend contest runs from one Friday to the next, so there’s no rush to get your entry in over the weekend. I know the name’s a tad confusing and it’ll be changing in the near, near future - but just deal with it for now. Last week we posed the question: What’s RIM planning for 3GSM in Barcelona? Check out the official contest post for all necessary information. There’s prizes involved, by the way.

Corporate UK looking for CRM and FFA in BlackBerrys

If you’re looking for a straight answer, go straight to the source. That’s what LAN 2 LAN, a leading networking and mobile integration specialist did when they were surveying next generation BlackBerry users in corporate UK, asking what type of application they would like to see most in their future devices. Looks like CRM and Field Force Automation are sitting right atop the list.

Andy Tipton, head of the Mobile Data Division at LAN 2 LAN explains: “The survey demonstrates that mobile CRM tools are a logical extension to the BlackBerry platform. They enable field staff to have access to and update information at all times. This allows them to spend more time in the field, and less time relaying information. It also ensures that they have the most recent figures for customers so that they can give the best service.”

ThoughtPiece: Which Celebrity Would You Like to See in a BlackBerry Ad?

Thought loosens his tie a little this week with this one. Give it a read and some solid thought. Pun kind of intended, I guess.

It’s Super Bowl week in the US and in honor of all of the marketing hype that this represents, I thought I’d have some fun. I would like to comment on some celebrities that I would like to see used in advertising for the BlackBerry brand. I am a realist and so do not expect any of this to actually happen, but then again I was also foolish enough to recommend that RIM spend the big bucks on a Super Bowl ad. So, thoughtful readers, please indulge me in my flights of fantasy.
