Bacon On BlackBerry: theme issues, Outlook issues, more issues

Q: Good evening. I have a BB 8100 sim lock to O2. How can I download the Vodafone Today theme?

A: The theme’s don’t depend on sim-locking or anything else. You just need the COD files that contain the theme and you need to copy them to your device. BlackBerryCool did an article a long time ago describing how to put themes on.

Finding the Vodafone theme might be tricky but I’m sure it’s been posted on some forum on the ‘net if you search for it. For other themes, check out as we have 10 unique themes are will be adding many more in the future.

Q: I have BlackBerry 8700g. It has been linked to my office email and usually is working well. But yesterday, I was out of the office and I turned it on and the tracking wheel would not highlight the icons in order. It would only highlight vertically and only three things.

There was something like arrows up in the righthand corner of the screen. When I would click on the wheel, a tiny window would ask me something about moving something as though I were stuck in some kind of mode where I could change the order of the icons. It absolutely would not stop doing that. I couldn’t even make a phone call.

Today, I brought it in and plugged it into the computer. After awhile, it was back to normal, scrolling sideways through all the icons. What the heck was that all about?

A: Sounds like the ALT key was stuck down or you were in ‘move icon’ mode. When you hold down the ALT key on the home screen, the scrolling will go vertical rather than horizontal. If you ALT+click you will get a menu up with a ‘more icon’ option. If you select this then you will be moving the icon rather than scrolling around the home screen.

Q: Is there any way I can create a rule in outlook to redirect my messages to my blackberry since I got rid of the BES?

A: One of the pieces of software that comes on the CD with every BlackBerry is the Desktop Redirector which is included with the Desktop Manager. Using this tool, you can redirect any email account from your desktop to the BlackBerry.

Q: I can’t seem to get any type of Blackberry calendar to come up on my system. Is there additional software that I need to make this work?

A: There is no desktop calendaring software for the BlackBerry however you can integrate with commercial calendar programs like Outlook. If you sync your BB calendar (via the Desktop Manager) to your Desktop you can then use Outlook calendar to view, edit and create calendar entries.

Q: I have a question which I’m hoping you can answer. I recently moved from an XDA II to a blackberry 8700. The BB is just fantastic but one of the great features I used to like on my XDA which I haven’t been able to replicate on my BB is:

If I had an appointment in my diary (but not a repeating one) which say occurred in something of a pattern, like a 4 or 5 weekly visit to the barber, I could hold the appt with my stylus, choose copy, move to the next occurrence and paste it and the text and time would appear in the new slot.

I have not been able to find a way of doing this in the BB … I know you can copy and paste the text but I haven’t been able to figure out how to copy and paste the entire appointment.

A: I don’t know of any way to copy the entire appointment and paste it. In fact, I can’t even find a way to do this in my Outlook 2007 =). You can set a recurrence on the appointment though. So you could set the appointment to reoccur every 5 weeks.
