RIM to pay royalties on 3G BlackBerrys

RIM and the InterDigital Technology Corporation have recently updated their patent agreement, extending RIM’s use of ITC’s technologies through 2012 to include 3G handsets. Their old licence deal from a few years back dictated that RIM issue royalties on just GSM/GPRSE/EDGE handhelds. It’s bound to sting when you’re locked into paying someone else for your product (especially for that long), but if they called dibs on the patent, you’ve gotta pay the piper. On the plus side, this does signal some 3G BlackBerrys in the near future.
