Windows Live Messenger, Hotmail available for BlackBerry

While Live Messenger was only available on certain carriers earlier when the BlackBerry Instant Messaging Clients review was underway, it just recently opened up and is available for free download. All the usual goodies are there, like smileys and status messages, but it looks like this launch is also being accompanied by a Live Hotmail app as well, offering free push e-mail from your Hotmail inbox.

Hey Simon I think the “Carriers limitation” is still out there, yeah we have seen many AT&T users are glad to use the Live Messenger goodies, however, I test it myself the RIM ft. M$ present - Live Messenger and Hotmail still refuses to work on my China Mobile network, says “Services not enabled on this handheld”, no wonder what would happen to those on overseas carriers like Vodafone, O2, Orange, TIM, Telefornica, 3, T-Mo De, Smartone, China Unicom, NTT DoCoMo, etc,. So my guess is this new version (2.1) Live Messenger is a north-america-available software. I believe technically RIM is able to deliver this service to customers on any carrier, but as in a market-oriented world, some carriers may ask RIM to sign some “xxx exclusive only” deals to compete with their industry counterparts. It means this v2.1 Live Messenger still needs certain service books to be enabled, which just reminds me China Mobile’s WAP strategy towards 3rd party service providers. China Mobile blocks its users’ UAs (user agents) as a result 3rd party service providers will not be able to identify customers’ handheld, in other words, can’t deliver services to customers via OTA unless they pay some money to join China Mobile’s online community codename “Monternet”. What a world! Shoot me.

The “available for download” link doesn’t work for AT&T users, and may be an older version of Windows/MSN Messenger.

The link that works for AT&T users and is for version 2.1.32 of the client is:

JerryD’s link works for an 8130 on the Alltel network as well, when the original didn’t. Please update the link in the post with the added “20″ on the end.

Thanks for the tip!

That link from Mario worked for me too on an 8300 from Rogers, when the link in the post previously did not. Thanks Mario!

This showed up on my Telus 8330 yesterday on my unit. Not sure if they pushed it or what. My wife’s didn’t have it, but mine did and I didn’t download it from anywhere manually.

I ran the wizard and it works. Very cool.
