Slacker Announces Availability of Mobile Radio Application for BlackBerry Smartphones

Press Release

Exclusive station caching feature guarantees playback everywhere while also dramatically boosting battery life and performance

LAS VEGAS - January 8, 2009 - Slacker, Inc. today announced the availability of the free Slacker Mobile application for BlackBerry smartphones from Research In Motion. BlackBerry smartphone users can now hear their favorite Slacker radio stations wherever they go, whether they are connected to a wireless network or not - a Slacker Mobile feature exclusive to BlackBerry smartphones. The application, which is compatible with BlackBerry Device Software version 4.3 and higher is available as a free download by visiting from your BlackBerry smartphone.

The Slacker Mobile application provides BlackBerry smartphone users in the U.S. with a personalized music discovery and listening experience pulling from over 100 expert- programmed Slacker stations, over 10,000 artist stations or a nearly unlimited number of the listener’s own custom-created stations.

Slacker station caching, an exclusive feature for BlackBerry smartphones, enables mobile listeners to store favorite stations on a memory card, allowing Slacker music service to play without a network connection while boosting battery life up to 5 times that of streaming playback and enhancing application performance. In addition, BlackBerry smartphone enthusiasts can enjoy Slacker Personal Radio while doing other tasks such as emailing, instant messaging or web browsing.

The groundbreaking Slacker music service enables listeners to enjoy Personal Radio stations and hear their favorite music without ever having to manage playlists or research new artists. Included in the Slacker application for BlackBerry smartphones are detailed artist bios and album reviews for each song that is played, providing the ultimate resource for music discovery. The Slacker Mobile application works with the free Slacker Basic Radio service, along with Slacker Radio Plus and Slacker Premium Radio subscription offerings.

“Slacker Mobile makes your BlackBerry smartphone the ultimate personal radio player,” said Dennis Mudd, CEO of Slacker. “And because of our caching technology, BlackBerry owners can play their personal radio stations everywhere, even on subways and planes, with much better battery life and faster song skipping than is possible with streaming stations.”

“Our new BlackBerry smartphones provide truly impressive audio and video performance that allows the smartphones to serve as powerful and conveniently accessible personal entertainment devices for consumers and business users alike,” said Jeff McDowell, Vice President, Global Alliances at Research In Motion. “With access to millions of songs and easily customized programming, it’s no surprise that people are excited by this new application.”

Slacker Personal Radio, available online at, enables listeners to personalize over 100 professionally programmed stations or create, edit and share their own Personal Radio stations. Slacker listeners also have easy access to artist profiles, album reviews and cover art on the web, with the Slacker G2 portable and now on BlackBerry smartphones.

Just wanted to say thank you blackberry cool for posting this. If you hadn’t I probably would have never even hearf about it. Let me say this is one great app. Some much better than XM and its free!!

This totally awesome except for one thing that is a big deal for me. It doesn’t work with my blue tooth head phones. :-( bummer

CORRECTION: It worked with BT headset once I cycled power on the headset.

This app is killer however there are a few things I would suggest that could improve things:

    - If I get an Email chime it seems that I have to shut down and restart slacker to get it playing again. I’m not sure if there’s an easier way. I have to fiddle as I think I may not have had to do this on one occasion.

    - It crashed my 8330 once when I first installed it and played with it but not since. I changed permissions to allow all but not sure if that helps.

    - A caching OTA option would be nice. Maybe you can limit it by number if bytes total per month to use this way, how much bandwidth, only when on external power, etc. (BTW, putting the station sync app on the USB launch list was clever)

    - It does not seem to support a blue tooth remote control device. My BT8010 lets me skip songs and restart playback if I get an Email chime. Even though I can get audio I cannot control the app with the headset the way I can with BB media player.

Can’t think of anything else yet. This app rocks!

Disappointing….no Canadian access! FlyCast it is.

Unless of course you live in the States and have Verizon…bastards still haven’t released the new OS upgrade!!! Grr!!! It will not work on the older version.

The caching works pretty good however the sync client kept crashing when getting station definitions until I renamed the \slacker\stations\definitions directory.

Doesn’t work with my Blackberry 8350i Software version
The best their tech support could come up with was “try reinstalling”, which did not help.

Unfortunately this app doesn’t work if MDS isn’t configured. It appears to use the internal connection instead of the carrier network. Big mistake in my opinion.

Big mistake indeed. Especially since the caching feature allows for a completely stream-free implementation. Technically, you don’t even need connectivity. Also, some people have unlimited carrier data plans but their servers are capped.

I installed this app 2 days ago and it is the best music program ever! The caching feature allows you to never be without you favorite music genre no matter here you are or what you are doing. Listening to the music while doing all the normal things you do with your Berry is awesome! Easy to use and fantastic sound quality while streaming makes this a must have app for any music lover

I know it’s a little early to start complaining…I’m just happy they finally released Slacker for the BB. I’ve been wearing this app out for 2 days now and it’s crashed my Curve(v4.3) at least 7 times. BB reboots comes back up fine..I relaunch Slacker & jam out for a few more hours and it will unexpectedly reboot again. I’m sure Slacker v2.0 will address this issue sometime in the future…or not. It really doesn’t bother me too much…again, I’m just happy to finally have the app!

No Storm support at this time - when is it coming…?

  15. 15 Gary Hancock

I must be one of the lucky ones because it has yet to crashmy system nor have I had any trouble with syncing or any of the other issues above I am running os 4.3 with sprint only because they haven’t released 4.5 yet on a 8130 and everything works just fine even Bluetooth. I am believing that maybe I should find some wood to knock on though

  16. 16 Billdo

I just DL OTA on VZW Curve 4.5 and is Awesome :) Does anyone know if this can BT to a MOTOROKR 1505? I ordered one off Amazon and am expecting delivery tomorrow. Also what does the message ‘6 skips remaining’ mean when the channels are changed? Did I mention Slacker Rocks!

  17. 17 Jinger recently made it to the I phone…how much longer will the Storm have to wait?

  18. 18 G

I have the 8830 with verizon and it says I need OS of 4.3 or higher is there a way I can upgrade OS on my own or do I have to get a new phone? I want to try slacker

  19. 19 babyboi46
