Top 5 applications for conferences and traveling

I have taken my BlackBerry device to several conferences and I’ve found that there are a few applications I cannot live without. These applications should help you save money and be organized while on the road.

Mobile Data Alerter

Mobile Data Alerter is a simple application that allows you to set thresholds for all your data rates. The app will monitor your WiFi data, roaming and non-roaming data. By setting alerts for your roaming and non-roaming data, you can be assured that you won’t get a huge bill at the end of the month.

[ED NOTE: Mobile Data Alerter is currently free but they will be charging for it eventually.]

While at a conference or traveling, you’ll want to take pictures and video with your BlackBerry. The problem is, sending them to anyone will cost you a fortune in data charges. With vPost, you can capture all of your video, pictures, audio and captions, and then save them in a well put together vPost to send as soon as you get to WiFi.

Download vPost for your BlackBerry for $9.99 or get the Lite version from App World.

IM+ for Skype (Skype when it launches)

Getting some form of VoIP is really important for saving money on calls while on the go. Currently, the only Skype available for BlackBerry is via IM+ for Skype. IM+ for Skype has not been getting very good reviews and I have had some tough times with it myself. It does serve its purpose for now, but I suggest getting the official Skype as soon as it launches. Assuming it will be at least mediocre.

Download IM+ for Skype for $29.95.

Aerize Email Alerts

Getting an email alert is important for staying organized on the go. With Aerize alerts, you can get previews of all your incoming mail and SMS and decide which are important and which can wait. By seeing what emails are coming in, you can decide if it’s time to move to a WiFi area in order to send out your responses, or finish up on the golf course.

Buy Aerize Email alerts for $7.50.

While on the go, you don’t want to miss out on all the most important news of the day. Viigo is a mobile RSS reader that allows you to read previews and full stories of all the latest happenings.

Download Viigo for your BlackBerry for free.

Sorry but not all right in your note. There’s a free Skype application for BlackBerry: iSkoot, it’s from the makers of the Skype application 3 Mobile in the UK is loading into all its mobiles and using to offer free calls over Skype.

I have use it with O2 and Vodafone UK, on corporate accounts, and iSkoot works well on my Pearl: Skype to Skype calls, SkypeOut calls and chat even with emoticons. The only downside would be that it is a bit hungry on battery consumption but besides that, highly recommended.
