Details of the Storm3 are popping up all over the place and it looks like it’s going to come late 2011. Yesterday, we heard rumors circulating that the device was heading to production, and 3D renders have recently popped up that look just like the first images we saw of the device. All of this seems to confirm that the device is definitely coming in 2011. The specs for the device are rumored as follows:

  • 1.2GHz processor
  • 3.7-inch 800 x 480 capacitive display
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • Tri-band UMTS/HSPA
  • 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording
  • 8GB eMMC (storage for apps and data), 512MB of RAM
  • microSD slot
  • Magnetometer
  • Proximity sensor
  • Accelerometer
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • 2.4GHz b/g/n and 5GHz a/n Wi-Fi + UMA
  • 3G Mobile hotspot
  • Optical trackpad
  • 1230 mAh battery
  • BlackBerry OS 6.1
  • OpenGL ES 2.0

It’s awesome to know that more touchscreen BlackBerrys are coming but the device updates are moving at a pretty slow rate considering RIM has been dangling the QNX carrot in front of users for some time now. It’s natural for large companies to move slowly and it just goes to show that just because you have over 10,000 employees, doesn’t mean things get done any faster.

Late 2011 is too late for this device. RIM needs a solid touchscreen offering (preferably a LTE enabled 9830) on Verizon right now…

Great specs…for a year ago. Other than the 1.2 GHz clock speed, these are the sort of hardware specs RIM SHOULD have been putting out in 2010, not LATE 2011!
