Breaking Down the BlackBerry 8800 (and friends?)

When we got the word late last Friday about pics of the BlackBerry 8800 (that’s right Engadget, BlackBerryForums had it first), we weren’t expecting to be greeted with no less than 3 devices and talk of “Crimson” and “Indigo”. The forums have been ablaze this week with speculation about what that means, and we’re here to sort it out for you.

When we first told you about the BlackBerry 8800 last month, it was going by the code name “Gamma Ray” and was not to be coming with a camera. It appears now that the term “Gamma Ray” refers to a broad spectrum of 88xx devices (consider it a Gamma Ray burst, if you will).

Let us begin with the “Indigo”. Shown below, it seems to be the cameraless BlackBerry Boy Genius talked about, while still featuring microSD, multimedia features and the now ubiquitous scroll wheel. It is also apparently set to have WiFi support; it will not have a faster processor. Various sources (including the guy who leaked the shots) believe that we’ll see the “Indigo” before year’s end.

[…] Maybe this will be the new pick-up line. I feel sorry for whatever ladies it gets tried on, though. No matter, thanks to Douglas’ insightful commentary on all of the BlackBerry 8800 info that’s currently available, combined with a suspicious jpeg of specs that we received on Monday, we’ve got a point for you to ponder. Rather, a question to answer. […]

I like the Crimson.I’ll buy the Crimson on the day one when it comes out. Camera (to take those unexpected need for it) + WiFi are great the 8800.

You may have had it first over Engadget, but Engadget is where the majority of people read about it first. It’s just a more popular site. I only found your site after I read Engadget and then googled for more information.

I’ve heard that Cingular will have an exclusive on it in the US for about 6 months. Also that the wi-fi module will be disabled - too bad, would be really nice to have.
