Otterbox Makes BlackBerry PlayBook Defender Series Case and It’s Huge

While at the BlackBerry World conference in Orlando this past week, I was given the opportunity to check out all kinds of BlackBerry protective gear. The company that stood out the most to me was Otterbox. Being the klutz that I am, protective gear for my BlackBerry is always of utmost importance.

I was able to chat with Otterbox, who hooked me up with a black Commuter Series case for my Bold 9700, and a hard plastic stand for my PlayBook. What’s nice about their smartphone cases in particular is that they don’t add a whole lot of bulk to your phone. They’ve got a sleek style, and unlike some other smartphone cases, it doesn’t make my BlackBerry look like a half-morphed Transformer.

BlackBerry 6 Response Times on the Bold 9700 vs the Torch 9800

Have you loaded BlackBerry 6 on your Bold 9700? Even the leaked version that hit the Internet recently is more responsive than the Torch 9800. I’ve loaded the latest version of BlackBerry 6 on each device and even though the Torch 9800 has more icons on the screen, the Bold 9700 is definitely more responsive. Hopefully the Torch will get faster with a few more updates because the lag time on the device is a little frustrating. Other than that, the Torch is arguably the best BlackBerry to date.

Sweet! BlackBerry 6 Leaked for the Bold 9700

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is expected to go official with BlackBerry 6 but for those of you who can’t wait for it to get out of carrier approval, a leaked copy of has found its way online. BlackBerry 6 is a huge improvement over OS 5 and almost every 9700 user is going to appreciate this upgrade. It’s too bad more devices didn’t see a BlackBerry 6 upgrade, but by the time most users are on 6, we’ll probably be seeing OS 7 (the QNX version?). Here are the links you’ll need:

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is official and the biggest selling feature for this device is the better camera, additional Flash memory and of course, BlackBerry 6. • HSDPA support (3.6 Mbps)
  • Built-in GPS and Wi-Fi with UMA support (802.11 b/g)
  • 5 MP camera (JPEG Encoding, CMOS) with Auto focus, Image stabilization, Flash and 2X Digital Zoom.
  • 512 MB Flash, microSDHC memory card slot (up to 32 GB)
  • 624 MHz processor
  • BlackBerry 6, the new operating system for BlackBerry smartphones which includes:
  • Crisp, more immersive visuals, including new icons, graphics and animations
  • New WebKit browser; it’s high-fidelity and very efficient, with tabbed browsing
  • Graphical, context-sensitive pop-up menus
  • Redesigned core apps, plus a new multimedia UI and new apps for downloading podcasts, watching YouTube videos, and integrating RSS and social networking feeds

The Bold 9780 is going to be available from various carriers beginning in November, and we have learned already that T-Mobile will offer the device November 17 for $129.99 with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

More details available from RIM.

Rogers BlackBerry 9700 and Curve 3G 9300 Updated with UMA Support

blackberry curve 3G

A few days ago Rogers rolled out updates for the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 and Bold 9700. The updates are for OS v5.0.0.846 and v5.0.0.862 respectively and they bring unlicensed mobile access (UMA) connectivity, allowing for voice over Wi-Fi calling (formerly Talkspot). You’ll have to talk to a Rogers representative but UMA is a helpful service that saves you minutes and money.

Videotron Mobile Service Launches with Bold 9700 and Pearl 3G

Canada has a new mobile provider and similar to WIND Mobile, Videotron uses AWS spectrum to offer 3G. The new mobile provider is selling the Bold 9700 and the Pearl 3G, along with a host of Android devices. The network is restricted to Quebec, so this post should probably be written in French, mais combien d’vouz parlez Francais? The good news is that if you’re roaming around Canada, you should get service in 95% of the country.
