OS 5 Adoption Rates for the Tour 9630 and Storm 9530

Initially, Verizon’s Tour 9630 users were quicker to adopt OS 5.0 than Storm users. One month after the official release of OS 5, 71.1% of users upgraded to the new operating system. The Storm 9530 in comparison, saw only 61.4% after the first month, and took a full three months to get past the 70% mark.

The higher rate for the first month may be due to pent up demand after Verizon and RIM took their sweet time releasing this. Although, the early release of OS 5 was more productive for the 9530 which has since climbed to 81.4% adoption.

These statistics come from the time of download of the popular free game Pixelated. Given that this game has been available for both devices for a while now, it is doubtful that there is any early adopter effect distorting these numbers.

There is another OS 5 adoption analysis from back in February available here.

BlackBerry Cool Roundup for the Week of February 22nd

If I had to boil the week down to the biggest news, I’d say it’s centered around the news that Verizon is dropping a ton of older devices from their inventory. There were rumors from analysts that the Storm (probably the 9530) was going to be nixed because it wasn’t selling well and there were so many complaints about the device. Soon after the leak we saw some official looking documents saying Verizon will discontinue the Storm 9530, Curve 8330, 8830 and Pearl Flip 8230. While I like the idea of killing old devices in favor of newer ones, I just hope prices continue to come down. Hit the jump and catch up on everything that happened this week.

Verizon to Discontinue the Storm 9530, Curve 8330, 8830 and Pearl Flip 8230

There’s a semi-confirmed rumor that Verizon will discontinue the Storm 9530, Curve 8330, 8830 and Pearl Flip 8230. We’ve heard that the Storm is on its way out, but its news to see the Curve 8330 (America’s most popular smartphone), and the Pearl Flip, a form factor that was never really given a chance, are both gone as well. We all knew that these devices would be on their way out eventually, as carriers update their stock with the latest devices.
Are you sad to see any of these go?

BlackBerry OS 5 Adoption Rates Slower Than Expected

Despite OS 5.0 being released over 3 months ago, 26.6% of 9530 users are still using OS 4.7. While OS 5.0 use has increased over time, the 73.4% that use it now are not that much more than the 61% that used it the first month after release. Most users either upgraded right away, but those that didn’t are unlikely to upgrade at all. Given the many improvements in OS 5.0 everyone should switch, but a surprisingly large number have not.

This data comes from the users who have download the popular free Pixelated game from BlackBerry App World in the given month. Pixelated does not report back at all, so statistics are taken via App World at the time of download. Statistics are from the 9530 model only in order to create some consistency across the data, especially given that almost all 9530 users are on the same network (Verizon). Pixelated had already been available for the Storm for a few months before November so these numbers are not skewed towards early adapters, but neither are the numbers skewed towards those that have little use for their phones, as this population has still gone and downloaded a third party application. Data from the beginning of the month and the end of the month were treated the same.

The above graphs were made from the data I collected, with the most relevant being the recent month of January.

BlackBerry Battery Cover Review: Bold vs Tour vs Curve vs Storm and more

Over the years RIM has been continually changing the BlackBerry battery cover. Some covers have been better than others, and I thought I’d put together a review post including new and older devices. The devices included in this review are:

BlackBerry Bold 9700
BlackBerry Curve 8530
BlackBerry Bold 9000
BlackBerry Storm 9550
BlackBerry Storm 9530
BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220
BlackBerry Tour 9630

Generally, I’m looking for a battery cover to be solid, sturdy, easy to remove and put back on, and have an element of fashionable design.

OS now officially available for the BlackBerry Storm 9530

OS OS is officially available from MTS Mobility for the Storm 9530. Reading around the various forums, it seems that the keyboard glows and the pop up keys are back. I have also heard that some users will find their headphones with media key controls will now work.
